I have to respectfully disagree. But this isn't an issue important to me so I won't post anymore after this post. No offence to you. I just don't agree.

My mom used to tell me that it doesn't matter whether a guest of our home is rich/poor... smart/stupid... we owe them the same hospitality (but not the same family privileges). The rich and smart fellow may have a lot of wealth but he is still a guest and not family. When push comes to shove, he isn't going to share his wealth with us. When our family is down and out, he has no obligation to help.1 Use him as an example why our country is a preferred place of residence for vip talents.

Just because his kid goes to NYPS, and he lives here... he gives free consultancy to the Singapore government and to Singaporeans? Why would he do that? If not, we can easily fly in consultants for this express purpose.3.His family will be here for many more yrs so Singpore has alot of opportunities for him to express his views on critical areas pertaining to our focus in positioning our state as a regional financial power hse.
I used to have an American tenant. He's still living here and working here. I didn't see him contribute more than what he was paid for. The last I heard, he is arranging himself a spot in Thailand to retire to. Singapore is a great place to make money.Edureach:
People like him don't park wealth in the country he lives in. They park wealth where the returns are greatest. He moved his whole business operations here? He is employing people here then? Or are his bases in China and USA?2. Opp for him to park some of his wealth in our banking system.His family will be here for many more yrs thus creating spill over effect and room for creating jobs.

Seriously? He'll go by to pick his kid from school and at the same time take the opportunity to educate NYPS parents? This sounds like wishful thinking to me.5. It creates opportunities to add financial knowhow to staff and parents of nyp who get to meet him. Hence ther's a knowledge transfer for those fortunate ones.

If this is what the Singapore govt thinks then if I were Miaor (the PRC PR who posted just some posts earlier), I would laugh my head off because Miaor has clearly hinted that if others consider us a stepping stone, it is because in some way, we are not good enough to be a Home.6. It puts our tiny nation on the world map and allow us to punch above our weight.
Come on... family is family... Singaporean is Singaporean... guest is guest. I would never give over my heritage to someone else's GEP son just because my own son is not GEP, and then be proud that I have attracted someone else's son to my side.
Smart or stupid - my son is still my son.
GEP notwithstanding - the other boy is still someone else's son and his loyalties lay elsewhere... and I share no part in his reflected glory... and I should not claim that I share that reflected glory.Edureach:

The last time I spoke to someone in China, she told me that she was thankful that the schools teach what they test. Their standards are high, yes. But their teachers can cope.
PRC's Maths & Chinese standard much much higher than S'porean students. They can easily beat us in national exams. -
Yes, my daughter chinese tutor also mentioned that the way the china school teach maths is more interesting and holistic than ours.
If you look at their school chinese textbook; it is so interesting.
They read poems and from there learn new words and phrases.
It is a far cry from our school’s chinese textbook. -

For a nation to be regarded as a country that’s progressive, dynamic and happening, it needs star talents and must be of diverse backgrounds. Hence, financial players, scientist, artistes, sports personnel etc.
The more well-known the better as it positions Singapore as a dynamic and happening place that will attracts even more to come. I am talking about star talents, the internationally known not just ordinary unknowns which are plenty. Top talents are mobile, how often we do get people like Jim Roger, Jacky Chan and Jet Li to be here? We know Jacky had contributed part of his fortune to NTU. As to how much their money is parked here statistics will always be unavailable.
Just for a while imagine our ministers making appointments to call upon their counterparts in the first world. The more prosperous we are, the more our leaders will be received with open arms. International relations are operate on such basis as we know. For a country to be rich is always look upon by others. Imagine u walk into a LV shop at T, the moment you hve committed to buy one top of the range bags and considering others, you will be treated with respect and adoration. Pri 2 kids now learn that money talks. On this material planet, money is the currency of international relations. Go and see how many long established unis willing to compromise on their entry requirements to recruit foreign students. You know well.
I must add money does not bring happiness but is good to have alot so that we can be a blessing to those in need.
I for one will not apologise for being a good trader and investor. -

If we don't get emotional about what Miaor is saying, it is clear that she has in a few questions demonstrated sharp and incisive thinking. Too bad if it is ouch for us.
We are a stepping stone and it is OUR fault because we only have a few good schools (that the PRC parents want to get into or else there is little reason to stay). The quality of our schools follow the normal distribution curve because MOE cannot control its schools... and therefore natural randomness prevails.
See Miaor's post below. If so many consider us a stepping stone, then we CANNOT be punching above our weight and it is time to face that bravely and do something about it. Stop deluding ourselves.Miaor:
When SG-reans are accusing PRs using SG as a step stone, have you ever wondered why?
(1) Why does SG govt have to use your tax to pay higher salary to hire PRs?
(2) Why don't just invest the money to better education and make SG-reans more talent?
(3) Think twice about the reason why so many SG kids are excluded from those branded primarys.
(4) Why are those schools are so popular.
(5) Why do SG kids have to suffer from the rigorous primary education.
IMHO, the policy is rather a politic move than something improving SG education system.

Context is very important when you choose to use words that are not the norm. mrswong mentioned \"pah buay si\" in the same sentence to quantify the usage of \"cockroach\".
Sun Xun usage of \"DOG\" is meant to be insulting and not to describe loyalty and honesty as you put it. -

Not true leh, choosing a good one not necessary acceptable, it depends on how the message is put across. We were being called dogs (who are faithful and loyal), but SX put it in a very unfavourable way and we were all offended. So being \"as resilient as a cockroach\" ....... well, 见仁见智。 Is it OT already?
But at least she qualify it with \"resilient\".. so it lessened the \"crime\" :evil: :siam:
