I'm surprised that you've uncovered the real truth on Finlands' healthy education system. They have always placed public education as their top priority among other national issues. They are still regarded highly for their unconventional methods and we should study their system carefully. I hope MOE would learn something from the Finnish. I, for one am a believer myself in their system. I know because I was there for five years.
yes, I have always noted how a small cluster of northern European countries ( eg, Sweden, Denmark, Finland ) run their governance. They dont get excessively overboard like the Greeks and Portuguese, nor as prominent as the Germans and French - but they are pretty efficient and very pro-citizens.
As for your wish on our system, it is unlikely MOE will make such a big shift in another direction. I think, in my personal opinion, it started in the 80s, when the education process was highlighted to sieve and search for the creme of the crop, possibly to shortlist potential future leaders of the country. Somewhere along the line, they missed out that compassion is an important attribute as well, other than fantastic results, leading to the present situation of meritocracy in our education. :oops:

We definitely need a HUMANE education system here, but it won't happen. Bcos our leaders do NOT believe in it. I really want to manage my expectations but yet find it hard. I know my son is not RI material...so I must know my limits. Do what we can, and accept that he has done his best. -

Streaming and exams, in sifting out the best, puts the desires of policy makers first before the needs of children.
Is it really better to separate children of different abilities or have them in the same class?
Although competition is good for some, it is not necessarily so for everyone. Overemphasis in competition may cause children who are late bloomers or slow learners to feel demoralized. We see this happening in our society today, even in the adults' world.
On the other hand, having children with different abilities in the class allows children to have an early feel of what society really is, instead of being put into ivory towers early in life and losing touch altogether with society at large. In our current system, the early stars are 'spotted' to become future leaders and policy makers, yet, many ends up singing a different tune that majority of the people cannot identify with, and finds unconvincing.
When we put students with different abilities in the same class, the stronger ones have the opportunities to help out the weaker ones while the teacher's attention may be focused on those who really need more coaching. (In the Finnish system, teachers give stronger ones more challenging questions to tackle whilst helping the weaker ones).
This forms a society in itself where the stronger ones develop their leadership, communication skills and empathy to serve the society at large when he grows up. It becomes a natural process of nurturing leadership, rather than being grouped together with similarly strong ones to compete with each other.
How else could our society have become like what PM is saying,\" 'self-centred' Not-In-My-Backyard syndrome\"? I can't say this sort of thing happens only overnight. And I am only just saying from point of view of Education system. -

How right you are about the current situation on our education system. Back then, to have a winning horse, all you need is a thoroughbred. Today, it has changed little since and I believe the stigma of good school, bad school will stay on for another generation or two.

All schools are good schools. One possibility of definition.
Academic:
more than 50% of student pass PSLE.
Health:
No students lives are compromised.
Attendance:
More than 50% of students attend more than 50% of lesson hours.
Environment:
No dengue, malaria and food poisoning outbreaks within school compound.
Quality:
Pass ISO9001 with no non-compliance issues.
