I did my own data search on the government website and these are the numbers I compiled:

2010 37967
2009 39570
2008 39826
2007 39490
2006 38317
2005 37492

This does not include the children of those PR. Expect much more

I believe MOE will ask the schools to open more classes if the birth rate for that particular year is high right?
Sometimes the sch will increase classes if there is a demand.
eg my sons' sch, Catholic High, for many yrs, the intake is 7 classes of 30's, ie total 210 students per yr.

In July 2010, application for 2011 intake was so overwhelming that by phase 2A2, only left 18 vacancies ie 9 each for phase 2B & 2C!

So in July 2011, the sch increase 1 more class, so 30 more students can enter p1 in 2012.

Dear All,

My son is born in 2008. I would like to know what is the birth rate of Singapore on that year? And is there any way by which i can find out how many children born in 2008 are there near to the school of my choice. Kindly advise accordingly.

Assuming such data can be collected, there are still too many variables in the equation. Hence, no point finding out.

These numbers are great as general guidelines for the size of the yearly intake of students...of course, they will not factor in other factors such as children born in Singapore which have left the country permanently, new citizen children, etc...so of course the exact number of students registered for Primary 1 this year will not precisely correspond to the number of children born in 2006, for example.

Low birth rate does not mean you have more chance at the good schools. It just means the not so popular schools have more seats unfilled.
