Goodness, a brolly is to shield the sun or rain, not for hanky panky business.
Yes, the function of the umbrella is to shield the rain and sun (must have UV protection)...but in geylang, it serves another purpose, to get 'business'. Those women can't possibly get biz hiding in a corner...it's very competitive too
didn't know dat.
Dis must be for d streetwalkers, not those girls 'contracted' to brothels, yes? -

I always carry an umbrella if park quite a distance from the coffee shop.
if you carry big umbrella, no worry.
Those girls stand by the roadside, waiting and soliciting customers under the hot afternoon sun in those Geylang lanes carry only small umbrella. -

u mean like those collapsible ones? so it's like a secret code?sleepy:

in this industry, there is some form of communication "protocol" going on.
those pimps, hard core customers, bouncers, prost know.
morning they sleep. don’t see them come out in the morning (maybe bec they work late). But afternoon, they appear.
actually the umbrella is really to shield them from the hot afternoon sun.
but what gives them away is:-
i) the way they dress.
usually, they’re sexily dressed + make up.
ii) they stand a long time on the road side, waiting.
if they are waiting for taxi, soon they’ll be gone after hailing a cab.
but inspite of Taxis come and go often in Geylang, they still loiter around. -
phtthp:
Looks more like a code rather than to provide proper shield fr hot sun, isn't it?

Don't dis also mark them out as soliciting to undercover police? -
umbrella serve both ways.

umbrella serve both ways.
But why by doing dis, also provide a target for undercover cops? -
I like to eat at Geylang. I ALWAYS carry small umbrella. It never occurred to me that this signaled… and until now, it never occurred to me to look out for ladies of the night… I just walk from my car to the yummy place.
How come you all see so much? -

I know what you mean and I don't fight that. Choices, like time and money, are limited at times and may not be available to one at all time. precisely because I have a choice, I choose something that I want to believe is the best out of the situation, not just for myself but also people around me. Precisely because my child doesn't not have a choice (he can't choose his parents, can he?) that make me realize I need to make the rit choices for him. Him, that girl and every kid deserves a good chance in life. no, I don't have any sympathy for that girl but I don't want to stone her. I stay neutral towards her.
I get where you both are coming from. But besides agreeing with strparent that it takes two hands to clap, I think it can also be construed to be very hurtful to some working mothers who do not have the choice to work part time or stay home. There are mothers who are widowed, stuck with a good for nothing spouse, struggling with debts or simply not well educated enough to have much career choice. All they can do is concentrate on paying the bills and hope that their children will turn out okay.deminc:

Agree. That's why I made a career switch two years ago. I could have been a financial controller if I had stayed on that job but I decided to become a clerk in order to be a part of my child's growing up years. I reckon the furthest I could have gone is being a CFO or a something and I probably could have earned a million before I am 40. But nothing can buy my child's growing up years back, even if I give up my million(s).
I decide that it's more worth while to be a part of my child's life.
I personally know a mother in such circumstances. Unknown to her, her daughter was drugged and possibly raped at twelve. And yes, she became a teenage escort, even as she gave her younger sister pocket money, and protected the younger sister from men who wanted to date the younger sister - men in their twenties while the little sister was only thirteen. This escort bakes as a hobby, contributes to grandparents, and has had her ups and downs. She is hardened, she sees herself as tough and cynical...all this time the mother is just working hard at shift work to pay off the husband's debts. It's not always so straight forward.
Of course, I could have done all a good mother can do for a child and yet, my child still goes astray. Well, if I had done my best, then it's just too bad (haiz shd have continued my climb up the corporate ladder!). But if I decides to be selfish and my child turns up the wrong way, do I blame him?? No, it's my fault![/quote]I know this was a number of posts back, but I guess unknowingly it's hurtful to FTWMs, esp to say that it's a selfish choice to be one.
Everyone has their own circumstances, and we all try to be good mums, spend as much time as we can nurturing our kids, pointing them in the right direction.
Sometimes having a very controlling sahm can have the opposite effect from what is intended on kids. A good number of my peers have better relationships with their mums who worked than those who were sahms. I suppose sometimes it's due to the mums themselves, might not be because they were or were not sahms. but i think being a sahm has certain endemic effects that one has to be conscious about, not to let it skew one's familial rlps.
Although generally I still agree that kids with sahms are very blessed, and the mum has definitely sacrificed to be with the kids, whether they had a five-figure salary job or just a 3 figure salary one. It's infinitely easier to be in the workforce than thanklessly facing one's kids each day.
