My good friend went for her yearly checkup with the gynae and was told that there is a 7-8 cm fibroid behind her uterus (last year the fibroid is 5cm). She is 45 years old, married with one kid and has no plan to give birth anymore.

At first, the gynae suggested myomectomy. However as my friend had a myomectomy 5 years back and the fibroid return after 1 year, he suggested that my friend consider hysterectomy so that this problem will be solved for good. He said that the hysterectomy will only remove the uterus and will leave the ovaries intact. As such, there is still female hormones and need not take hormone replacement medication.

She is vexed on which option to choose.

Ovarian cysts, fibroids is so common in women yet there is not much treatment option except to remove it surgically when the size reach 5 cm. There is also unknown cause of it, so there is no way to prevent it. She even went on TCM for 8 months, hoping to shrink her fibroid in order to avoid surgery. TCM advise not taking cold drinks, not to take food that nourish the blood (bu xue) and she followed diligently. I know of some ladies who take cold drinks every day yet do not have such gynaecology problems.

Appreciate if mommies could comment on this issue.

I'm keen to know more too. I'm in early 40s, has multiple fibroids ranging 2+cm to 5cm & they are still growing (~1cm per year). Was also advised by gynae to remove uterus when the fibroid gets bigger but I'm hoping to hold it out till menopause as apparently, it's growth is fueled by our monthly cycle. Unfortunately, my cycle has been shortening since a few months back (only 2.5-3 weeks now) so think may not make it.

Any experience sharing would be greatly appreciated :please:

Read from web that China can use ultrasound to cure the uterus fibroid without ‘cutting’ by knife…

it has no symtoms no pain, no unusual but all the while i have heavy bleeding durming my monthly menstr ( since secondary school) . When i went for my annual medical body check at Mt Avnia, the scan show that i have a fibriod around 3-5cm , gynea said is harmless but need to monitor.

When i returned the next year, it had grown to around 8-9cm. Gynae adviced, if i wait longer to remove, she cant used use \"key-hold \"surgery...so i decided to go for it.

                    Hi Snowball

May I know how much is your key-hole surgery? How much can you use medisave. My friend is quite concerned about costs as her insurance policy has excluded this in the policy. As such, she can only use medisave and cash for this surgery.

if i remember correctly, is around 5k-13k :yikes: ( my gynae's charges + Gleneagle Hosp - belong to the range of costly category) but medisave covered quite an amount + co's insurance + own insurance....i m lucky tat i paid not so much. 😓

your friend can check with her gynae on the charges n get adviced fr the insurance co. as this was what i did before the surgery ( to be mentally prepared)

but i learnt a very important lesson, to have insurance coverage is very important :please:

                        Hi snowball

May I know is your key-hole surgery the ‘laparoscopy’? Did the doctor only remove your fibroid but keep the uterus?

Do you hear any doctor good at it in Gov hospitals like KK, SGH, NUH?
