      Hi,

My son is in Pathlight K2 now. Intend to enrol him to mainstream P1 next year. But his behaviour changes recently. Make me so worry... Anyone has good therapist can work on the behaviour issues?

      thanks in advance! 🙂

        Hi Lavina,

Thank you very much for your reply, really appreciate it!
Glad your son has come through and is now not so special anymore. In fact, he sounds like a really typical teenager!
Yeh, that’s what I think too, to succeed in mainstream the kid himself must be able to follow well, to understand questions, do worksheets and clear the exam papers on his own! Nowadays with so much awareness and services relating to "special needs", I can feel the tide sweeping the kids down the "special needs" path and that is what I am trying to avoid.
There is just no use talking too much about what my plans are and what I hope my boy to be etc…Bottomline is, either he can survive in mainstream or he just can’t.

          Hi desertwind,

Yup, I have worked very hard to avoid sending him down the "special" path too. So i concentrated my efforts on academics rather than life skills. If without all the pushing, coaching and tuition, he probably couldn’t stay in mainstream. I was quite hard on him, not to the extent of Amy Chua tiger mom, maybe 70% lah! Anyway, just my 2 cents.

You have your son's best interest at heart, Lavina, and you do what it takes to help him as best as you can! Really admire you and I hope my boy will also be able to make it through mainstream too!

Anyone know if there is any prep classs for P1 for the special need children? Not on academic but more on adjusting to a primary school class environment, structure, etc.

                  Hi Sheryl,

Besides those conducted by CDU of KKH, NUH etc , some AEDs in the primary schools will conduct a 1 day (or half day) P1 orientation cum social skills camp for the special needs students registered with the schools.

You might like to contact the AED in the school of your choice and enquire. 🙂

My son’s therapist is suggesting that we start teaching him some P1 syllabus now. Just teach the concepts. Prepare him academically so that he will has less to worry & less stress. We will have also have more time to prepare him emotionally & help him to adjust to school life. How to we know or get the P1 syllabus?

                      Hi Sheryl,

There's an example of the maths syllabus in this site.
                      http://www.teach-kids-math-by-model-method.com/singapore-math-syllabus.html

The AED in my girl's school had suggested that I purchase additional set of school workbooks for all subjects to teach her at home and practice. This will enable her to understand what the teachers are saying when they touch on the subjects in school. I did that for her when she's P1 & P2.

In addition, I printed the past year papers for her to practice on as I came to realise that the teachers seldom teach from the textbooks.

                        Hi All,

I'm new to this forum .Intro.... i'm a mummy to 2 kids -Boy 6 yrs & Girl 4yrs. I am at loss of what to do of my situation...sigh...My son is in K2 now and his development is not on par with his peers of his age.We seek advice from KKH Child Development Depart and doc recommended OT & PT for my son. He has some speech delay too. OT & PT therapy has been goin on for the past 1yr.

Doc mentioned he is not autistic but slow in his development and my worry now is his entrace to P1 next yr .Doc advised us to let our son sit for the entry test in KKH (which i am currently waiting for the date) and it would be better for us to defer his P1 and allowing my son more time to be ready .I have few questions any appreciate any advise ..I'M AT LOSS & CONFUSED .

Now...should i retain and repeat him to K2 and give him an ample time to be ready for P1. But then again by repeating him in the same school , me n hubby felt that it will lower his self-esteem becoz everyone is promoted and he has to retain. We also felt that he will be like a turtle in a shell if he repeats and we are not giving him an opportunity at all to be exposed to a new environment with new frens. On the otherhand he might struggle in P1.

If we proceed to register for to P1 can we get KKH to give a note to school abt his development and hopefully with possible discusssion with the teachers they are able give him that xtra support in school. He is slow and of course we parents hope that we he mix around with brighter kids in the school along the way he would eventually pick up. He like blur blur sometimes and we wonder how is he goin to buy food during recess time , will he get lost in the school...etc etc..there are so many issues in our mind....HELPPPP!!!!

Am a LOSS..appreciate any advise
