      Hi,

Came across this question but I do not know what method can be used to solve it. Don’t think I can use algebra, right?

Q: Jane has equal number of apples and oranges. After giving 9 apples away, and Jane has 2x as many oranges as apples. How many fruits did Jane has at first?

      Thanks in advance. Cheers!

P2 don learn algebra only P6 but this question is only for algebra method but you also may solve it,not using algebra.

        The answer is 18
        the method is 9x2
        Check
        18-9=9
        9x2=18

          No of oranges remains unchanged.

          Now,

          oranges –> 2 units
          apples –> 1 unit

          At first,

          oranges –> 2 units
          apples –> 2 units
** same no of apples and oranges

          Thus,
          1 unit –> 9
** gave 1 unit of apples away

          4 units –> 9 X 4 = 36
** 2 units of apples and 2 units of oranges

          36 fruits altogether.

          PS: easier to draw model…

                  Using guess and check method:

                  10-5= 5; 10x5= 50
                  9-4= 5; 9x4= 36
                  8-3= 5; 8x3= 24

Therefore the 2 numbers are 9 and 4.

First find the factor needs to multiple into 36, list them out like
                      1 and 36, 2 and 18, 3 and 12, 4 and 9 and 6 and 6.
                      Minus like this:
                      36-1=35. So wrong
                      18-2=16. So wrong too
                      12-3= 9. So wrong too
9-4=5. And correct as it was what the question looking for.
So the was 9 and 4!

I think it is 19 as it did not say \"now\". I also think it 28 as it also did not say \" at first\" still my final answer is 19.
