      MummyThreeStreams,

I just got this book http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Materials-Music-Theory-Programmed/dp/0205654207/ref=tmm_pap_title_0. It may not be too useful for you since you have some music background. The book is good for us as it comes with answers. Very handy for those without music background like me.

Another book that we are using is the AB guide to Music Theory. The previous piano teacher actually recommended my son to read this book when he was working on Grade 2 theory. Aside from these two books, I also google the internet for interesting music theory websites.

Haha, I am definitely not qualified to prepare my children for grade 5 theory exam. But the least I can do is to prepare them enough so that they will have an easier time with theory when we return. :xedfingers:

There is an app by ABRSM for IPad, you can try that too. Other theory apps are also available though they don’t seem to look as good… I have not tried any of them personally so it may be a hit or miss.

Thanks Chamonix! I'll get the AB Guide and pass it to the piano teacher there. See if he/she can teach from it. Any decent teacher should be able to right?

Actually I would just get the past year theory papers and the model answers. You do not need to exclusively use only ABRSM books to prepare for their exams; any other theory books will do as long as they cover similar topics as ABRSM. Americans have very good theory books as well.

Glad you like the book. I personally used that book when I started learning piano.

One slight problem that may surface would be the use of terms. In US, crotchet is known as quarter note and so forth. Other than this, should be no problem. Better still, you can read the book together with your son. On one hand, you can refresh your theory and on the other, you can keep track of his progress. Killing two birds with one stone. 😉

This book is like a textbook. Since you intend for him to take the theory exam upon your return, it will be good to pack some theory practice books as what Dreamaurora suggested.

I’m learning to play Canon in D and realised that there are different versions on the Internet. Anyone knows where I can get the easy (and full) version of Canon in D from any free website?

You can buy a digital copy of the Schultz's arrangement of the Canon from sheetmusicplus website.

You can go IMSLP website and download the violin part and get the chords here later. I can’t remeber them off hand now. The bass repeats the same chord after every 4 bars.

Any idea how to teach 3 years old without parent sitting in? She comes back from work and discuss with me after the son’s lesson. Currently using Little Mozart but he has problem following through some instructions.
