it is not impossible to estimate

Let's hv some numbers then to form d preliminary basis for discussion.

a few starting points is possible :

      1. number replacement citizens needed -- old age / death / retirement versus citizens entrants into work force each year

      2. what is the cost that each working adult has to bear to support the old, sick, invalid and retired ?

just some random thought from my 'throne room'

My worry is my children future. All good jobs might be taken by them. They are cheaper, driven by wealth and success. Willing to do more and paid less. So do we teach our kids to be like them, selfish and cold.

I am really lost with words. I really want the old Singapore.
they are cheaper ? may be we are over paid and over priced !!

the choice is getting the same pay as them or sit at home ? or be like them, seek greener pasture elsewhere

20 years ago, no Singaporeans wanted to be posted to China even with double or triple pay .... the Malaysians went on behalf of Singaporeans / Singaporean companies ..... they gained the experience and network while Singaporeans continue to whine in Singapore about PRC citizens fighting for their jobs here ..... this I saw with my own eyes in the company I was working for

Just because we choose to exclude foreigners does not mean we will suddenly become prosperous. Potentially we will just be Singaporeans competing with each other within an increasingly uncompetitive economy. The well-off and well-educated will just decamp, the middle and lower classes will suffer the most. That would be the worst scenario for our children. We don't teach our children to be selfish and cold, we teach them to be lean, and diligent, and ambitious, and confident, and kind, and open hearted.

Like it or not, foreign participation in our economy is critical for continued growth. Even economic behemoths like the US and China cannot afford to exclude foreign workers, let alone Singapore.

            VK2010, dat’s d problem.

using very rough guesstimates when more accurate n up-to-date data (ref ur point 1) wld be available in National Population n Talent Div, PMO which tracks these figures.
Why shouldn’t these info be publicly available?

It will pave for never say die attitude that whatever comes I'm still standing.

Indirectly, children will not be overwhelmed by challenges of any kind .....come wat may.

and to recognise that the competition is global, and they should think global too

think about the story of NASA spending million$$ in R&D for a ball pen to write in space while the Russians just use a pencil

what kind of paradigm are we in ?

Indeed buds, resilience. I fear for my kids facing up to global competition........but not facing up to it and sticking our heads in the sand will be far worse.
