Learning Point - Discussion

TAS does compo writing weekly. Only sometimes when it is nearer to exams and most kids have finished their compo exam, they would focus more on paper 2 but other than that, most weeks, they will touch on compo.

Is TAS better or LP?
-
Hard to compare, I have only been at TAS and not LP. Best to go for trial, look at the materials and compare. TAS’s strength I feel is their methods of teaching, their teachers go for regular trainings, the teacher my older one is under has been at tas for nearly 2 years and she told me that they still go for regular training to learn new ways to teach that the trainers come up with.
For compre techniques that they use, you can request to look at their answer keys, in the answer keys, they write down for most of the questions (p4 and above at least) the techniques to apply and why certain answers are wrong. I frequently ask for their answer keys so I can go through with my kids at home especially for compre their mistakes. If LP has free trial, why not go for both and compare. I believe every centre has their own strengths. -
Don’t think LP offer free trial. How much is the fees at LP? Am contemplating between LP and TAS now.

forgot to add one more thing, TAS will try their best to help the kids. After the recent TAS mid year test, some of my son’s classmates in his class did not do so well and the teacher said they still could not cope well and they were offered extra lessons for a month for half the price to help them catch up as they were rather weak and new. Although TAS has good students, they do not just help good students, they also try their best to help the weak ones. I am not from tas or have any share in it, just want to state why I am so impressed with them.

Thanks ccgoh for your feedback.
This may seem like a wrong thread. But TAS sounds good from the way you describe. You are right, TAS environment is not that “nice” and in fact they are quite cramp. Heard from friend that TAS teachers are also quite young. Is that true? Would young teacher be experience enough to carry out lessons? Or maybe it boils down to materials instead of teachers? -
Yes the teachers are young, most are undergrads. I think while they may not have as much experience, they are well trained. I think their ability to teach well is more important than their qualifications or even materials. A centre could have the most fantastic materials and best qualified teachers but if the teachers do not teach well then also no use. TAS may not have the polish in their environment and teacher qualifications but I feel they are good where it counts, in their teaching methods and ability to produce results.
But have to caution that not all centres work for everyone. So best to try out first and also have the right mindset, that english takes a while to improveCos some of my friends expect instant results and that may not be the case.

, hopefully they are good so that I didn't have to look for another one. I hope I can get or see more feedback about the learning point rather than talking about TAS in this thread. Thanks though! -

Can anyone share what do they test in LP placement test? Are they difficult? What are the type of questions covered? Is it easy to pass?
