hi

Just to share, we used to stay in CCK and enrolled in Pei Chun as my DH was an old boy and he felt a brand name school is best. Our 2 neighbours with kids the same age too enrolled in various brand name schools becos of this belief.

Time is King
After P3 we all MOVED HOUSE. This is becos the commute became too tiring for parents, also as kids move to upper primary the after school activities become too much to juggle transport wise. The afterschool care centre near Pei Chun (highly recommended by parents) kindly rejected us as they felt my child will not benefit from it if she only needs to use it for 1 day/week and still pay for the full week. For Pei Chun min your child will need to stay 2 days after school in upper pri - 1 day for Higher Chinese, 1 for CCA. If your child is good in CCA and there are competitions, training can up to 3 times a week. If your child needs academic support then another 1 - 3 days burnt depending on how many subjects. This year my child finishes school between 3 - 5 pm EVERY DAY of the week. On Sat she has CCA.

School Bus is Not Convenient
After we moved house, i wanted to put her on the school bus. I now stay in AMK. BUT in the morning we need to wait a pre assigned public bus stop at 5.55am. The public bus stop is a good 10 mins walk from my house and it is not covered so rain will be a problem. So it is back to us sending her to school. Van and private transport back after CCA is $8 per trip. My friend who is staying in Bishan pays $4 per trip. If CCA ends at 5pm the bus operators may ask you to wait for the pm session to finish. Pls take this into consideration

Homework Stressful?
This differs from teacher to teacher. For the whole of P1 and P2, she hardly had any homework while my friend’s child in another class had lots more. Other children in other schools have double homework volume - and this is not even a brand name school. Finally this year in P5, the homework increased to a stressful level. A check with my friends also concluded that this year all our children have more homework whatever school they are attending. This is the school’s strategy to prepare for PSLE.

Is Brand Name School Best?
Well, MOE’s official position is that all schools are the same. The top PSLE scorers for the past 2 years are from neighbourhood schools. Other friends who have children in neighbourhood school also report stress and keen competition if they are in the top class. My personal observation is ALL schools will nurture the higher ability students with more challenging worksheets, camps etc. School teachers are now expecting parents to play an important role in CO-TEACHING their own child - the school teacher can only do so much.

The Pei Chun Advantage
Higher Chinese is offered to all students until P5/6 when you can opt out or the teachers recommend your child drops it. It is a school rich in Chinese culture so if your child enjoys wushu, weiqi, table tennis, basketball, volleyball - it is fun.

My conclusion is that it is not the school that matters, it is what you expect from your child and how much you want to undertake to assist your child make the grades you think is best.

Sorry for the long story. Hope it helps.
Hi Parents,

May I check if there will be alot after school activities for your children in Pei Chun?

I am keen to register my girl as my DH is old sch boy but we are staying in Sengkang. Transport is a big problem for us. We will appreciate any kind reply for the queries i have.
1. Does sch bus cater for after sch activities? Meaning if my girl need to stay till 4 or 5 pm. will there be sch bus?
2. When will after sch activities start? P3 onwards?

Thank you very much!

Hi
I heard from another mummy that she pays for a small school van service to ferry her P3 kid back (one-way) after her CCA ard 3-4pm twice/thrice a week... the fee is of course higher as this is an \"extra service\". Then again, she stays q near the school.. not sure if other sch van operators drive to further locations.

Hi both,

Thank you very much! I am very worried about the transport should i decide to enrol Pei Chun. Reli appreciate your reply.

Btw, how your kids coping in the school? Is it stressful?

Regards
Hi,

My girl is in P2 this year. I would say school homework is generally not stressful... There are Modular Assessments every quarter but that's fine as the kids are tested in a few topics at any one time. As the kids are not required to join any CCA in their 1st 2 years, they are able to really settle down and enjoy school until they are more mature in P3 to learn how to cope...which is also a good idea for me. Of course, the initial stage during P1 the kids will need some help to adapt to the new hours and new environment... it's transitional so there's nothing much to worry about.

Hi,

Anyone staying along balestier road? Heard the traffic jam is bad in the morning and evening peak hours… What time is the school bus pickup for afternoon session and what time does the bus reach the area in the evening after school? Any way to arrange for bus transport for CCA days or days when the child needs to be in school early or stay back after class?

Any updates on the single session timing or is it still 2016 as we know _previously?

Many thanks…

I would like to register my son for next year Pri 1. However, it seems like there is no transport from the school to Bukit Panjang area.

It there any parents who is staying at this area and what is the mode of transport for your kid to school daily?

Thank you for your advice.
