May I know if any of your autistic kids goes to special school such as Chao Yang, Grace Orchard or Rainbow? I am thinking to apply for my son but not sure which school to go to. I know Chao Yang and Grace Orchard is more for kids with Low IQ not ASD, but there is not much choice in Singapore. Eden is still on a long waiting list. Pls advise.

My friend's son is autistic, now P2.

She sent him to Rainbow (Yishun) branch.

I asked her, \"Why you sent him to Rainbow ?\" My friend told me at K2, her son did some assessment tests. Feedback was: her son can't make it to Mainstream. Teachers at Rainbow told her not to worry. They'll train him to acquire a skill when he grows up, under some form of apprenticeship scheme.

When i asked my friend, \"How much academic work does Rainbow (Yishun) teach students, in comparison to Mainstream primary school(s) ?\" She replied, \"At most only about 35% to 40% of Mainstream curriculum.\" Then she added, \"But there is a very long queue of parents waiting to enter Rainbow. I was lucky to get a place! Initially, parents sent child to Mainstream. Some can make it, so remain there. But some cannot. School then recommend them come to Rainbow, hence the long queue arise.\"

next i asked, \"Why don't you send him to Pathlight instead, can learn more ?\"
She replied, \"Yes, Pathlight learnt more academically - same as Mainstream, but only at a slower pace and less one Mother tongue subject to handle. But after assessment(s) done, Pathlight said my son not suitable. Besides, i can't afford the expensive school fees at Pathlight - costing $500 per month, at primary school level. Rainbow school fees much cheaper.\"

Yes most special schools dont offer mainstream curriculum. Instead its more about life skills, vocational work. I just wonder what is the difference between ASD class and MID (mild intellectual disability - Low IQ) classes. I googled and the fees for ADS classes are at least 10xs higher than the MID.

Yes it's usually learning more about vocational skills rather than academic. Their education path is much simpler, not even ITE level. I stay at CCK.
