All About Preparing For PSLE

Tan9, well said! :salute: hope your dd does well

Yes good sharing! I agree that getting ready for PSLE has a lot to do with our help. And reading newspapers helps for close compre, one area that usually kids struggle with. I get my kids to read one article a day and go thru with them the article if they have problems. And from young, got them to have a reading habit still trying for younger one but at least they read a book every month. It helps especially for languages.

Actually PSLE preparations start at P5. My son is taking PSLE this year, and boy do I wish he is only in P5, so that we can prepare and do much more than this crazy rush within this short period. He started having Math tuition in June last year, and it was only after several months after that that he got the hang of P5 Math. Before we realise, he is in P6 and suddenly we are fighting against time. :imdrowning:
This year, there are still several new topics for all subjects :faint: -

thks for sharing and i do indeed feel much better after reading your post.Dear mummies and daddies,
I am an active reader and I thank all the parents for their candid response and sharing, it helps that I m not alone.
My eldest dd is taking her PSLE this yr and like some parents, I nearly faint when I saw her math result in P5. I realize the format is drastically different. My dd is an average student but she is certainly not borderline so imagine my dismay when she flunk her math paper. :gloomy:
A yr later and hopefully wiser, I have this to share...... last yr, I came to this forum to look for a math tutor. I found one who came highly recommended. My lesson - what works for others may not work for you. I discipline my children, but I draw a line with tutors who are out to belittle and crush their confidence. :heresmyfish:
Luckily, my mother-in-law gave me some good advice, a year later, my dd has improved 2 folds - though it is not the ideal goal we set her yet but she is more confident and is a happier child. All this without a tutor.
So don't let the tutor tell you what yr child can or cannot do. Don't subject yr child to entrance tests set by those silly education centers. Understand yr child weak points, language is about reading. Once, an expat native teacher told me, the one way to improve English is reading, reading and reading. I am terrible with Chinese but for my child's sake, I learnt and we make an effort to spend 1 hr everyday in that language whether to read, write or listen. After 2 yrs, she actually score second highest ranking in her oral score, doesn't hate the subject and even joked with her Chinese teacher in mandarin. So for English, make an effort to read with yr child, newspaper is ideal to start with for P6..... Though I found mistakes! its helps with cloze passage, comprehension and vocab. Science section B is about key words. Every experiment is to determine that one factor - yr child needs to identify that impt pt. Is it abt air occupy space? Strength of magnets? Etc... I let my child chk the answer as they do so they understand what is the key word.
Even if u sent yr kids to tuition, dont rely solely on them. U r your kids best guidance as u know them best.
PSLE is important but it should not define our child's future. I like the logo of ACS - the best is yet to be. So parents, cheer up, chill, educate and remember to have fun! :imcool:
Sorry for the long sharing, hope it helps some parents out there!
DS is in P4 this yr, his results has all along been borderline since P1. i was stressed and worried for him all these yrs. even cried for him (w/o him seeing)but he doesnt seem to care at all
i am really waiting for him to 'wake up\"
to many, he is hopeless but in my eyes, he will always be my champion -
Hi chloecube,
I understand your feelings.
My son is just like yours...waiting for him to wake up one morning and see for himself that PSLE is just 3 months away. He didn't do well for CA1 and SA1...but i didnt scold him...just a very disappointed look. Hubby was very mad and even felt he couldn't go far. I hit the roof and was very angry with him instead   how could he, THE FATHER be so negative?
With the dates getting closer, I motivated and encouraged son to work very very hard. Did tell him that it will be tougher from now on but it is all worth it. Don't just dream about that secondary school but work damn hard to wear that uniform. -

sometime i wonder if the method i use is wrong, did i push him to hard or shld i push further?
the results from other kids are all well above DS's. i am not expecting him to be top scorer or get all subjects for Band 1. i only hope for at least a 70 marks for all subjects at P4.
his math and science are alightly above 70, but english and chinese just pass.
i am really worried for him. he left with 2 yrs to prepare for the major exam.
i wish u all the best and your kid for this coming PSLE.
no matter what, we shld not give up on them.
trying to comfort myself that PSLE does not determine his life.. -
Hi chloecube,
Don't worry about PSLE yet. You have next year to prepare.
Not every child is a bright spark. Mine is pure average, flunked Chinese twice this year. Not higher Chinese but standard one :faint:
When my son was in P4, he was managing just average. 80 for maths (highest), the rest were in 60-70 range.
I am still waiting for my son to 'wake up' one fine morning, hopefully soon before PSLE and give his best. -
your DS sounds like mine
we work hard together with them!
it is nice to find ppl who understand my situation here to talk to, thks! -
