      Hi,

A tutor quoted me $100/hr for a subject. Wondering if this is the market rate?

      Thanks!
Too ex, if only primary 4, get some undergrads...They can do a pretty good job

Expensive tutor doesn't equate good. Eg, my nephew was sent to one of those centre who tout to prepare him well for psle. My bro pay a few thousand dollars for the programme. My sis-in-law was telling me how great it is...... In the end? My poor nephew was crushed with his result...... But it is really up to u, if u feel it is worth it, who is to say otherwise?

Of course expensive is not equivalent to quality. But for private tuition, if your child shows no progress after a while, you can stop the tuition immediately. But if you are referring to those motivational package charged by expensive enrichment centres, you pay upfront and there is no refund.

Agreed. Yes, it is those centres. I really doubt their worth. However, to see if the tuition is effective, you need to let your child \"marinate\" for a while. Once, I had a tutor who came and after each lesson keep on telling me, \"I am not sure how to tutor your kid\"...... and she is a mature lady. I tell her no need to come after one month

Having the content knowledge is not equivalent to being able to impart that knowledge. Teaching is a skill. Just because I have the knowledge does not mean I can \"impart\" the knowledge to you.

I think as a good precaution, must always grill the feller and find out a bit more of the tutor's teaching experience (how many years, what's his lesson plan etc) regardless of whether he/she is an ex-teacher or undergrad.

I have a colleague who has a NUS Pharmacy undergrad teaching his boy secondary school chemistry, and he does a decent job too. He actually gives the student his own photocopied notes made during secondary school and JC (from HCI last time).

Expansive does not mean good. Most impt is what tutor can do for the child

So lucrative! No wonder some people doing part-time teaching and part-time tutoring.

I recently and accidentally found out my kid's teacher is an adjunct teacher and she gives tuition outside and doing a brisk business. No wonder my kid always said she did little in class and hardly has any homework.

So angry when we found out and went straight to the principal. Hope she will do something about it. Hope MOE will also put in place rules to prevent such teachers from exploiting the system!!

Seems like everyone claiming they are/were school teachers. Wonder how valid are all these claims and any parents actually try to verify? Or just take their words?
