Hi, my son plays international chess, I would like to know if it is easier for him to pick up Weiqi?

DS does not know how to play international chess so I can’t really comment. All I can say is the rules are simple and it’s easy to learn how to play. But to play it well it’s a different story.

How long does a typical amateur game lasts? I just learnt the basic rules today, hope to introduce GO to my ds1 this holidays.

Agree that it is not easy to find fellow chessplayers, even for international chess, my boy’s last game with his peers was 6 months ago.

Agree that not all will take to weiqi. But if don't try, will never know. I think it is a very good game for training kids to see the big picture and plan ahead, not just based on what is happening right now. True that not many people know how to play cos I tried so hard to find people to play with DS.

            hi limlim, jedamum & mother-of-2 ~ 😃

There are websites where you can play online.
The player can choose different levels / who to play with, etc.
Parents can ask the kids' weiqi instructor to recommend a suitable website.

btw, there is this great Japanese comics (漫画书) about WeiQi - titled 棋灵王 or 棋魂.
it has been said that every kid who reads this comics will be inspired to learn Weiqi ~ 😃

it can even be found at the WeiQi Association library. i used to sit there and devour this comics while waiting for ds, kekeke.. really fun to read!

Both are strategy game.. the similarity ends here.

Rules of engagement is totally different. Weiqi appears simple, only 1 type of seed.. rules are simple.. But gameplay can involve very intense focus on different parts of the board.. for beginners.. not easy. But there's a few simple rules to follow to make it easier to decide on the next step.

Thanks for the recommendation on the comic. Sounds interesting.

I would prefer DS to play with another person rather than online for the sake of his eyesight. Hoping to send him for dec hol prog again and maybe attend weekly class next year.

Blackbelt, good idea. He has to learn to play the game first 🙂

                        Accidentally found this interesting thread.

Is weiqi is less popular game in Singapore? It is very popular in china, Korea, Japan and it is a great mind sport which requires a lot of strategizing while playing with opponents. Highly recommended for parents who are thinking of holiday programme for their primary school kids.
