I think that is a good idea, about suggesting the school to implement the \"high ability\" class. The principal is new, so will be quite keen to build on this strength and enhance his credential. :salute:Yeah I too was a little surprised, but does that mean the school is worse off than another that produces 20 GEPers? I am hoping that the school will retain its good teachers and nurture this current batch of students all the way to P6. I've suggested to the school to implement something like 'high ability' classes next year.
wow, surprising.Saw those kids from Rosyth were still given coaching by teachers when they were taking the second round in Anderson....
Don't have. I don't know anyone who has gone for outside training either. The only place where I keep hearing of training is here on kiasuparents. If it's so effective, then GEP will be populated by rich people or people who don't mind throwing out $$$, but I don't get the sense at all.
I think they are coached for the GEP test...tony:
Hi all
May I get feedback from some of you whose children were originally already studying the schools offering GEP? Did the school provide additional training to your children when they were due to sit for the GEP assessment?
Thanks.
BUT, if its true that, as one of the parents implied, a proportion of the 26 kids from a certain top girls' school were trained and were therefore successful in getting in, then we will see (even?) more trained kids going forward.
Wish I had access to the training school's records, just to satisfy my own curiousity :).
for South View, teacher told class not to prepare and just go for it.
After tests, especially 2nd round, kid came back very happy coz the English test was an enjoyment. In kid's own words :\" There are a few long passages for my reading pleasure, so fun!\" Then, kid went on to ask : \" Since I don't need to prepare for GEP tests, can I do the same for SA2?\" - I almost fainted! -
Only Chinese. Private tuition.

I did teach my ds area and perimeter for the 2nd test though - cos sch had not covered that topic yet, as mentioned in MOE circular. It took me 2 sessions (1 hr each) - 1st session to teach basics of area and perimeter and do some questions, 2nd session to reinforce and expose him to more challenging ones.
Hubby said GEP test is a test. And we must always be prepared for tests. My argument is - it is a GEP selection test. No point preparing and coaching and getting child in and then realize child cannot cope. So I refuse to do anything extra. It was the same 2 yrs ago with dd. She is strong in her English but did not get selected in the 2nd round. Both my kids are just advance learners - but I always tell them they are not the Genius giftedness. -

Mine said very easy but boring. Anyway, he read a lot but his English is not so good, at least if you go by marks (if go by debating and coming out with smart aleck comments, surely among top in Singapore  ). Math is good, so I thought 50-50 at best. -
tony:
Haha. My mine, she's the \"safe n sound\" type - as long as there's one question to be pondered upon, the paper will be labelled as \"difficult\". Most of her friends said tests were easy except my kid.

As for English, kid loves to read (almost everything : books, mags, advertisement, etc) - as long as she sees chunks of words, she gets attracted to them  . -

hai..thats sound like my boy....haaa

Do you have any comments about RVPS when your DS was in the school previously? The new P is formerly from St Hilda's so I believe he will be leading the school forward.

Here’s what I was told by my Rosyth friend…
at start of pri 3, they had their own internal screening test… then the kids were asked to go to earlier (… hmmm must be afternoon session for the p3)… for extra on maths and english… can’t remember how many days a week… definitely each session was for an hour or so.
One of her acquaintances asked her … "do you know where to get Joe Cameron books?" She thought it was storybooks… later she found out that Rosyth also did IQ paper with the kids. Apparently she went to several bookshops and specialised bookshops just looking for Joe cameron IQ books… don’t know whether it works but looking at the nbr … probably… also this friend sends child to in-house vendor for the math olympiad training by RECMEL … went in before p3… don’t know how she did it. Both boys are in GEP. Both children were also at Learning Lab for gifted stream EL / Math / Science… in p6 year they were pulled out after Term 1… else Learning Lab will list child’s name on the board after PSLE results. My friend was also told that Success Learning Centre, next to Rosyth, also have gifted stream English… and these two boys are still there. They have been there since 2005.
If you have friends in Rosyth, perhaps they can tell you more…
