I bought at $13K. The most interesting part is, when dd was the testing the piano, this lady (she was ex-piano teacher, now retire) pointed to us dd's weakness and faults. I was looking for piano teacher that time and through her recommendation, I am very glad, I have found a wonderful teacher for dd. I guess, this is fate ....

If you are considering K8, do note that there are 2 models. One is retailing at $12K+ and the other one at $14k+ (before discount). So, be sure to check with the store on their difference, which is the sostenuto pedal.

Most of my friends did is the other way, so when the kids refuse to practice they just give up. I felt that it is not easy to learn anything, I told my kids not to give up easily, till now they still continue and enjoy.

Hi luckystar, its true, learning something new is never easy. My dd also nearly gave up at grade 5. Two of my friends mentioned before, many people would drop at grade 5. This is because at this level, they are already quite good in reading notes, so many would quit to persue further with exam and play for fun.

Yes, I agreed. When kids see parents' commitment to invest in a proper instrument, they also feel more committed & less likely to give up (I hope )

Furthermore, piano is less forgiving than a keyboard. If played the wrong key, super obvious, so the child benefits from hearing her own mistake & can attempt to play the pieces properly

Yes, seem that grade 5 is the stumbling block. I heard that from my dd's teacher too.

Personally, I feel that it's alright not to complete grade 8. Although grade 8 is the ultimate goal & if my kids have the talent or perseverance, I would be very proud of them. If not, it's alright to take a break. They can always pick up again at their own time own target. As long they do not detest the instrument, continue to play leisurely as a form relaxation, that's good enough for me

My elder girl took a 4 years break from piano lessons. She played her old pieces on & off whenever she's in the mood. Surprisingly, after such a long break, she asks to resume her piano lessons. Probably because she learnt some new pieces from her younger sister & hearing her sister practice somehow rekindle her interest

But after my dd decided to continue, it seems that the techniques and techinical parts of grade 6,7 are more to learn and explore. And she is quite happy, finally she is playing famous and difficult pieces from famous composer. Last night, we went to Maksim's concert and he played one piece that she is currently learning now. She is simply amazed by his speed and skill and I hope he can give her extra motivation and buzz !

I know yamaha U1 to U3 series is a very good buy. I got my U1E in 1997 and today it still sound very good and nice. Buy quality piano if you want it to last you a life time lor.

any advice on maintaining a piano:

1) fren advise putting star anise near the hammer to prevent white ants etc, does it work? is it nec for a brand new piano or more for 2nd hand piano?
2) anyone tried yamaha annual service? what does it include? is it worthwhile? piano teacher recommended private tuner where the cost is much cheaper…
3) where to buy piano socks?

2. I presume your piano is a yamaha? If your piano is new & still under warranty, can only engage yamaha tuner. Better double check with yamaha if you intend to engage private tuner in case they void your warranty

3. Can purchase from any yamaha retail shops that sell pianos

Hi all, I'm new to this Forum.


I would appreciate it if someone can advise on the choice of a NEW piano. Am getting for my 6 year old daughter who has just started learning on a 1-1 basis. Also got a 2 1/2 year old son. Both kids like music. Piano will likely be used by daughter, son (in the future) and myself (trying to learn piano).

Choices:
1) Yamaha U1 $9,500
2) Hailun HL 125 $3,600
3) Elington [spelled with a single L] 132 (Professional) - recommended by the piano teacher at NAFA $8,200

Which is a better choice? :?
