Hi everyone, need advice.
My son is born 2006 & was assessed to have developmental delays. His kindy teacher’s feel that he’s ready for P1 next yr (but of cos with more prep work & pushing). While the psychologist & I are more comfortable with him deferring to P1 in 2014 instead.
Thing is his evaluation is scheduled to take place AFTER July. I’ve been advised to continue taking part in 2013’s P1 registration exercise.
If we do decide to defer my son, would the school spot be held for him for 2014? Can I pay the school fees for 2013 yr to have that spot held?
Thanks v much in advance. We are really in 2 minds about deferring & are worried that he may not obtain a place in 2014, if the spot can’t be held. But at same time, he’s not ready for P1 & pushing him may backfire… -

My advice is don't delay if possible. How serious is the development delays? You need to access yourself. Spend plenty of time in coaching him. Some are due to lack of coaching and practising. Talk to the kindy teachers abt how you can help your child at home.Hi everyone, need advice.

Also, explain to your child that he may be slower or not as good as others of the same age, but if he keeps practising, he can be as good as them or even better.
Umm....as for the last part of the question, don't think they will keep the place for you unless you have valid reasons and will be joining p2 instead of p1 in 2014. Once you register this year, means your space is for this year. However, do talk to the school P and understand more. My son's kindy had a similar case 2 years ago and the P told the parents that they had to join in the registration q all over again. -

Curious. Why separate schools? Do you foresee logistics issues in future, as well as confusion over timings at times? -
Scary:
If registering in diff schools, there might be morn rush sending them to school, picking them after school especially with suppl lessons/CCA.lilfeets:

Thanks Scary for the advice! Noted abt not being able to hold place for following year.
Yah have actually stopped work for past 2years to look after him myself & the improvements have been remarkable. At same time, he has many areas which are still far behind his peers & we have observed that he will catch up eventually 1/2 to 1yr later than his peers. Another reason is because I also personally know of other children who have special needs and have performed very well with deferment - not just academically (which is not my only concern) but socially as well.
Nevertheless thank you for taking the time to reply. Will definitely continue to observe before making hasty decision.
Another question:
Does anyone know if child would be \"listed\" by school should we have to defer in the end? And would that affect his chances to be registered again in the following year? Many thanks!Scary:

If the diff is only 1/2 to 1yr, IMPO, I don't think deferment is required. Take for e.g, a child born at the beginning of yr vs a yr-end child born in the same yr. The difference maybe obvious in the first few years but eventually the diff will be eliminated as they grow older. Why not consider going through P1 first? At least you know what's the expectation. If cmi, retain a year. Just my personal opinion for your consideration. Thanks Scary for the advice! Noted abt not being able to hold place for following year.
