Hi all,maggicho:
UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor, the antibacterial factor in Active Manuka Honey that is responsible for naturally destroying bacteria such as staph (staph aureus), strep (streptococcus) and H. Pylori (Helicobacter Pylori). Only Active Manuka Honey contains UMF
. That makes Active Manuka Honey the only honey shown to kill H. Pylori.
The UMF is like antibacterials.
it is not advisable for young kids to take is bcos they are building up their immune- system.
Multivit that contains Omega 3 and 6, Bcomplex and Vit C would be better options.
Omega 3 and 6 is for brain development
Bcomplex is for energy release
Vit C is for immunity and antioxidants.
Hope this helps.
It is unsuitable for young kids? I thought most parents here are giving manuka to their kids?
Can I check how young is young children in this context?
I have been giving my 4 yr old manuka honey since he turn 3.
Oh dear, hope it's not damaging to him! -

Three weeks I just bought one with UMF10+ 1 kg bottle from wonderfulhoney.com Manuka Honey on line, it taste good, price is $82 per Kg. I have compare to few shop in the market, like hock hau, Yurenshen, etc. But of coruse not the cheapest one. My girl used to very difficult to sleep and keep waking up in the night, I let her eat a small spoon of manuka, since last week till now, she sleep so well in the night. So I want to share it here.

Just started on manuka active 5+ and noticed that it has helped me fight against the flu bugs. Is it ok to take this 2-3 times daily for the long run?

The difference is very significant and also the pricing.
All honey has certain level of antibacteria property that's why long long time ago during stoneage or during eygptian time they use honey to apply as wound care and also take it orally for health benefit. This type of honey is call Active. This active honey is tested with a rating to show its strength of antibacteria property.
In New Zealand, there is a type of honey call Manuka honey which not only can kill bacteria (which is normal for all honey) but can even kill antibiotic resistance bacteria. Then researchers subsequently found out that this type of special strength antibacteria property kills bacteria in a totally difference mechanism that was not seen before. And they call this type of special strength manuka honey contains UMF - Unique Manuka Factor.
So to keep things simple...Active honey is any honey that can kill bacteria not restricted to manuka. So longan honey or bush honey or any type can be called Active as long as it is laboratory certified. eg is this active NZ honey http://www.honeynz.co.nz/store/cat121/active+honey/p156/Active10+Wild+Flora.html
UMF on the other hand is only found in manuka honey. And it laboratory tested to kill bacteria in a difference mechanism from normal or active honey. So to say, UMF honey kills bacteria via the normal mechanism and also the special mechanism. Also UMF rated honey has been approved by US FDA to be applied as wound care. The company that produce this is Comvita.
As such, pricing is very different. Active cheaper. UMF damn ex. Can check the difference if you go Natural Farm and GNC. The price difference is huge.
Hope the info helpsa bit long it is the shortest i can go lah. If not very confusing this topic.
