Hi all, just like to check at what age should Preschool start teaching phonics? I went to visit a church kindergarten yesterday, was surprise to know that for PN level, it will just be letter recognition. Basics phonics will only start at N level, then advance phonics on k level.

Isn’t it a little slow to teach phonics at 4? Or am i just being a little too KS?

          Haha, yup, too KS.

Please remember that most kids are essentially still only 3+yrs old when they start N2. At todd and pre-N levels, they can be exposed to phonics when being taught the alphabets. But actual phonics lessons will normally begin at N2.

            haha… KS-ism of a parent.

read that some kids can read simple books on their own at 3yr make me a little kanchong, or should i say very kanchong. i suppose we parents must learn how to relax in this pressure cooker environment huh…

A good rough gauge/idea would be as follows..

              Pre-nursery level
Alphabet recognition & introduction to phonics-based songs

              Nursery level
Official introduction to single letter sounds / Phonemic awareness, Introduction to writing
*Some schools carry on with word building during the last term*

              K1 level
1st term - Wordbuilding and blending 3 letter phonetic words, reading simple one/two liner books (phonetic/sight readers), writing activities

3rd term - Wordbuilding and blending consonant blends / 4-5 letter words, reading 4-5 liner books (phonetic/sight readers), writing activities

              K2 level
1st term - Phonograms, silent letters sounds, special combination sounds up till completion of phonics programme, reading fluently, written expression

3rd term - Simple grammar, parts of speech, simple comprehension, written expression, journal writing

*Disclaimer : Not to be taken as an actual guide for all preschools

Yes indeed some children do read around 3 to 3.5 years old like my girls, but subject to variation of home stimuli, knowledge and time/effort of caregivers.

My kid child care recently changed hand from a big franchise to a unknown.

First day of the "new" school, the register changed, I saw Nursery and PG2 namelist combined to 1 list, and K1 and K2 combined as well.

Feeling uneasy, on 2nd day I asked why are they combined ? Are they really going to combined the kids in 1 class ? I was told they have plan but still pending discussion with the teachers … it was so shocking for me !

Nursery and PG2 I could probably unwillingly accept it but K1 and K2 combined learning the same things ??? I have never heard of.

Anyone know of any child care / Kindergarten do such ? K1 and K2 combined in 1 class… I am so upset and worried if they even have any curriculum set.

The director did not give me a good impression as well, look more like a hawker than a educator ! He could answer my question confidently. Even my son came home first day and say "there’s a new UNCLE in school…" sighz …

the teachers are nice and have been there since DS joined in 2009 … sad if i have to change school

Just wondering, besides Phonics, what are the other most common or important courses that all the mommies and daddies here have sent their 5 years old?

Anyone know the curriculum of living sanctuary kindergarten?

The Chinese standard is comparable to 天下.
