$2.2k for a bike

verykiasu2010:
:yikes:The National Parks Board (NParks) has bought 26 Brompton bicycles, for $2,200 each, for its officers to use on patrols.
But some Singaporeans are asking if the chosen bikes are too expensive, while others are unhappy at the tender process for the bikes.
NParks has defended its decision, saying the bikes were bought to boost staff productivity and that it adhered to government procurement requirements.
Bicycle shop owners say there are cheaper alternatives that will serve the same purpose.

Surely Police need bikes that can speed better?

They bought Bromptons. Bromptons are handmade in UK. The bike can be easily folded in 3 steps and push around after folding and bring up mrt or bus. There are 2 wheels that allow easy pushing after folding. So far, there are other branded folding bikes at $1k+, the Dahon but Dahon do not have wheels to push after folding. If the purpose is to allow cyclists to use the bike and easy access woth public transport, Brompton is a good choice.

However, there is time limitation on bringing folding bikes Up mrt and bus. Weekdays are from 9.30 to 4.30 and 8.30 till end of service. Weekends and public holidays all day access. -
The issue here is not the price of the bikes. There is another issue here

Is that the right way to spend taxpayers money..?
I owned this kind of foldable bike since some 15 years ago and I bought it at S$200-300+. It was a high quality one but I forgot the brand. I have recently given it to my MIL. She must be laughing in her dreams now if she knows such bikes can cost 2.2k these days. :faint: -
