What happens if there is no school within 1km of my address that offers the Mother Tongue we prefer (Tamil in this case). There are only two Schools (Corporation and Westwood primary) within 1km and both do not offer Tamil. Interesting situation we are in......

Xingnan and Rulang are definitely more than 2km apart.
My dd is in Shuqun and I can see Shuqun is strong in their Tamil curriculum but it has been going through balloting for the last 2 years for less than 1km under phase 2C.

Hi! you are referring to the the % of Singapore Citizen for last year 2011?

The new ruling starts only this year - Singaporeans will get absolute priority over permanent residents (PRs) in the Primary One registration exercise whenever balloting is necessary. Where balloting is required during P1 registration, Singaporeans will be admitted first ahead of PRs, before home-school distance is considered.

Therefore, as of last year 278 applicants balloting for the 235 seats at Frontier Primary School, it is solely based on home-school distance category in the following order of priority - Children living within 1 km of the school of choice.

Thanks for your reply. What i mean is, whether there is any source to find out how many SC are staying within 1km out of these 278 applicants.

From your reply, seems like ALL are staying within 1km? If that's the case, wouldn't it be more competitive for 2012 and 2013 registration?

What i'm trying to tabulate is my chance of entering Phase 2C as SC < 1km for 2013 registration.

Would like to seek advice on the following:
1) I'm considering between Xingnan PS which is well known for it's high standard in Chinese and the new school, Westwood PS with new facilities and in house student care. But i heard that new school has no CCA. Any advice on which is a better choice?

2) what is the difference between in-house student care and a student care nearby the school? Does the in-house student care provide better guidance and standard closer to the school?

3) Any good recommendations of childcare with student care near these 2 schools? I found out there one very close to Westwood is carpe diem, any comments?

hi meowmama,

brand new schools have fewer classes. based on the intake, MOE will post a certain number of teachers there.

for eg, Frontier primary started in 2012 with 8 classes of 240 students. 18 teachers were posted to the school.

with 18 teachers, limited CCAs can be offered because each CCA needs 2-3 teachers to be in charge of running it, even if external coaches are engaged.

so that is why new schools offer less CCAs.

as for which is a better choice, hard to say, depends on what you are looking for.

i can't comment on student care as I've not used their services.

as for your 3rd Q, there is a Peach Tree basc near Westwood. It looks pretty good to me.
