Royston Tan's gumption impressed coach Nazri Nasir. -- ST PHOTO: TUKIMAN WARJI

            Small player, big heart
            Published on Jul 2, 2012

HE WAS the tiniest member of the Singapore Under-15 team and, at 1.46m and 35kg, arguably the smallest player among the six teams competing in this year's Canon Lion City Cup.

But Royston Tan, 14, stood tall during the nine-day-long football tournament, which ended yesterday.

Coming up against boys almost twice his size, the attacking midfielder showed precisely the sort of gumption that his coach, former Lion Nazri Nasir, had been looking for.

Goalkeeper Kenji Rusydi and centre-back Amer Nazri had their moments, but it was pocket-sized Royston who won the hearts of many at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

'Royston may be small but he has a big heart,' Nazri said. 'Every time I called on him, he was always ready to play his heart out.'

Royston's performances were one of the few highlights for a team that lost all three of their matches, including yesterday's 0-6 thumping by the U-15s from FC Porto in the play-off for fifth place. Singapore's U-15s were also hit for six on Wednesday, that time by Manchester City's U-15s.

'I expected some players to perform but they didn't,' Nazri said after yesterday's loss.

'We kept up with Porto for around 15-20 minutes, then we just lost our concentration.'

But Royston, a Secondary 2 student at Victoria School, is hopeful that the experience of playing teams like Porto and City will prove invaluable to his side's development.

'They outplayed us,' he admitted. 'But now we know how to try and counter them.'

And he will certainly get the chance to face more such top sides, said Nazri.

'I just hope that by next year, he will have grown taller,' he added.

My son's friend is from Sengkang. We live in Hougang. VS is very far from here. Both my son's friend and my son get a lift in the morning. I think the school does have school bus - but not sure what time it comes in the morning. In the afternoon/evening - they take a bus to Paya Lebar MRT - Serangoon MRT -crossover to NEL and come home to either Sengkang or Hougang. It ends up taking 1.5 hrs for my son to travel - as he has then to take a shuttle bus back home.

Wow..1.5 hrs traveling to & fro daily is no joke. Have to ask my boy to consider carefully. What happen if the boys have to stay back late in school? They will end up reaching home very late & feeling very tired.
