How to save electricity?

FQW:
I thought this applies to aircon too, read somewhere before that it costs more to switch on and off and on again. Each time you off and on, the aircon has to \"work harder\" to cool down the room again. Can anyone confirm if this is true? DH likes to switch off the aircon for short while if he thinks it is too cold, but I have argued that this will consume more electricity...
This is a variant of what my dw said. She said the same thing with regards to leaving the toilet lights on. She also talked to some engineers.cherrygal:
Not true, I have been told by my IT friend that laptops, modems, set-top boxes etc consume more electricity if shut down and started up again every day. They also spoil faster coz it takes more energy and effort to start up from scratch.
Should only unplug if not using for the next few days.
Err, how much did you say your mthly utilities bill is again? :siam: -
Wa! Busymom, $700 is alot! Do you mean $700 every month?? Can pay for 1 maid’s salary or 1 month car installment or 1 year road tax or 1 year car insurance after abit of top up. I already find my $350 too high but I guess yours is much more.

 how can don't flush?!! :imconstipated:Imami:
There was I experimented with toilet bowl flush. Someone told me each flush costs $0.20. For a month (to coincide with sp services billing cycle), we flush the toilet bowl using recycled water. The water charges dropped by $13. There are only three of us in the household.
My pils told the kids that flushing cost $. So after they used the toilet eg. urine, they will just wash iso flushing.... But guess what.... the toilet started to stink and I've to get my maid to wash more regularly since it smell and I cannot stand it. It finally came to a point that dh just got to tell his parents to flush after each use as it really stink. Well.... the toilet don't smell that bad now.
So I guess sometimes, we cannot be penny wise pound foolish. -

How about modem? It is on 24/7 in our house.. Does it consume alot of electricity? We were told by the service provider guy that it is okay to leave it on 24/7 but i wonder will the box get spoilt by the heat it generated?
these equipments are designed to be on 24/7. -

I oso din know until now..
BTW, no side business one hor. But we are a family of 6 + 1 now. We don't use dryer, but quite a lot of washing (not sure if maids are loading the washing machine full or not though).
Wait till you hear about our grocery bills... that's why recently have to take action and personally see what are the groceries that are bought from NTUC. :nunchuk: -

those that boosts to save electricity by improving the power rating or something?I've came across those plugs that you can attach to power points. Someone got it from Bintan and gave it to me.
Apparently these will reduce the electricity usage. Anyone tried before? I don't dare to try as I scared it'll blow my electrical applicances.
In practical use, it should not make any differences. And don't believe the demo.. those setup are tweaked. -

$700! :faint: Oh woah ! My SP bills used to hover around $170. However, after we installed in aircons, put in a fish tank (for fengshui purposes) and an electric pot - my bills suddenly surged to $280. :faint:
Erm.. ours $700+... :yikes:peapot:
Aiyo, not fair leh...everybody I know or hear about has lower PUB bills than mine. It's so exasperating!
We hardly use the dryer. Only thing must be the air-con, computer, fridge and oven. I hardly use dryer. Should I off air-con main power? When I want to use air-con then I turn on main power.
I also try to collect rain water but seriously if it's a pail, require at least 10 showers before I can fill up the pail. So I give up on that idea.
Used to be $500+ according to DH. But now with a new addition, aircon is on most of the time in the day...
In our case, guess it's aircon and water tank heater. The heater is also on 24/7 because don't know when my kids need to wash after pooing...
After some efforts to save water and electricity, my bill nowadays is around the range of $210-$230 which i still find is very high. If it is during festive season like CNY where my MIL will cook round the clock for at least a week or two .. my bill will clock up to about $300 or sometimes more ! -

 how can don't flush?!! :imconstipated:
small business they just use those water hose to rinse. big biz must flush if not :faint:
But.... the smell lingers on.... Anyway.... after dh's recent outburst that pls flush and don't be penny wise pound foolish, I think they finally get the point. -

Most likely your aircon will spoil faster if frequent switching on/off.

And, for some appliances with motor coils like aircon, it is not recommended to On too soon after switching off.
If it is too cold, just increase the temperature setting. The aircon will on/off the fan coil and compressor itself to regulate the temperature.
Switching power on/off would produce current surges which is not very healthy for appliances like air con. -

Guess this is similar to us, except that we don't on TV much. Got one fridge and one more freezer... haiz
The $500 or $800. Possible!! Turn on aircon living room almost whole day. (24hr - 8hr we sleep), then bed time, turn on bdrm aircon. Big Plasma TV also almost whole day (FT housewife or in law nothing to do - watch TV whole day), huge fridge (2 doors type with ice maker), heater tank turn on 24 hr bcos they need for washer, kitchen and bath. I know of someone doing this - >$1K
