Comparing Pre-school English Reading and Phonics Enrichment

twinkle2009:
Hi twinkle2009I've enquire with Mind Stretcher yesterday and was told that my 3.5 old is not ready to enrol on the foundation class as he doesn't know how to write yet. At this class, all kids should at least write simple alphabet & numeric. They suggest to equip him with writing skills before he join if not he will feel left out and teacher have no time to guild him individually.
Any idea is it true that all if not most foundation class need this criteria before he can enrol? Pls advice.
Although most of the phonics/english class for 3-4 yrs old will require them to write, there are still centres who are not as strict as MS - eg I Can Read, Kumon, Morris Allen, Lcentral (My fren's son just enrolled, he couldnt write). -
I just enrolled my child of 3.5 years old in Kent Ridge Phonics class in changi city point. I think it’s very helpful for her and she like it alot. She said it’s very fun over there. The class is quite small so I guess she would be given the attention needed.
Maybe you would like to give it a try, my child also cant write yet. -
My daughter was able to read using phonics since 3.5 yo. She is currently 5 yo and able to do reading independently. However, we are thinking of sending her for English enrichment to learn about grammar and other skills eg. writing. Can I check if the pre-school English enrichment courses focus mainly on reading and phonics? Do they also touch on grammar and writing?
Hope someone can enlighten me

Hi tuxsam,
English enrichment focus mainly on reading for child age 3-5. Only till 6 and above, they will teach them to write ie write in sentences and paragraphs. When they are little, writing is in the form of single word or phase. -
mrl_with_love, noted with much thanks. I will register her for the enrichment class beginning of next year then. Thanks again!!

HELP -
Hi, I know a phonics teacher who does private lessons and she's quite popular among her students. I'm not sure if she is available though so it's best to check with her direct. If you're interested, you can drop me a PM and I'll pass you her contact.

Dear Parents,
I am currently looking actively for an english enrichment class around Punggol area. Could anyone share good english programme for 4 years old? -
Hi Parents,
I am new to this forum and find this site very informative, really appreciate parents for sharing they experiences.
My DD just turn 3 yrs last month so bring her to LC for assess, they put her in foundation class. Then we went for trial, teacher told me they learn 2 letters "F" and "S" sound this week and do some art & craft + colouring and some games which all is fine to me and my DD enjoy it very much. I am thinking to sign her up, on the 2nd thoughts, she is in full day childcare. Aren’t they do the same things when she is there? Is it doubts?
Maybe I should send her to some other classes for brain development? e.g. shichida etc… I am just thinking maybe brain training for 1 yrs then send to LC when she is about 4+ yrs so she can adsorb better and fast. Will that works?
I need some advice, appreciate if anyone can share your thoughts. thanks -
Dear DYJH,
I could share with you what I have gone through.
I sent my son to Lcentral when he was 4.5 years old and now he is in PFS stage (K2 this year).
We started bed-time reading when he was 3yo and thereafter I slowly encouraged him to read out loud daily ( the process wasn’t smooth as he dislike to read on his own).
I tried out many books. Started out with Peter and Jane that was not appealing to him at all. He then read My Magis School Bus phonics series (available in Popular), I can read series- Frog and Toad/ Uncle elephant/etc (available in library), then proceed to chapter book. The first chapter book he read was the 3 books of My father’s dragon , book written by Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, and now reading The Wizard of OZ.
He reads on his own with guidance on NEW WORDS only.
Aside of reading English story book, he recite Chinese classics as well. It takes 45min to 1 hr for both languages. Sometimes when I am busy, I would just turn on the CD and he would recite on his own. Then, I would turn off the CD and ask him to recite.
I have started my 4yo daughter with P&J book 2a now. She is not ready to read on her own. Need to bribe her with sweets to motivate her to read out loud.
