SOME teachers are not able to teach a class of 40. This is true even in our time.
Agreed! Some teachers couldn't or didn't bother to teach even during our time. It's just parents' mentality has changed.

I wonder what is the MOE policy for allocating good and experienced teachers ? If some parents insist the school teachers teach well and some parents don't, maybe we should appeal to MOE to rotate the teachers from reputable schools like nyps to other neighbourhood schools and vice versa. They insist all schools are the same And parents insist schools teach well anyway. And since it is so difficult to get into all the reputable schools with all the volunteering hardships, then we should bring the reputable schools teachers to the neighbourhood schools to promote social mobility. And for such noble acts, the teachers should be paid more bonus .

in fact they do but not trumpeted

some of the favourite science and math teachers had been transferred out to other neighbourhood school, some even in the middle of the acad year

Fine, teachers aren't able to teach a class of 40. So that's why we need tutors. AGREE ?

We did not need tutors back then...teachers could teach the kids...it was also about the same number of students in the class too. Why aren't teachers today able to do that ?

Who trains the teachers ? MOE or schools ?
But you make no mention of this in your original post, which is a completely different discussion point. It was a tirade against the press, against PSLE, tuition centres, ending with \"Parents are kiasu because MOE made us so.\"

I agree with Funz, there were good and bad teachers back in our day too. The amount of content and depth has increased dramatically since then, and the content delivery, in my view, has kept up in general. But there is a lot more that a child can learn these days outside of school, as parents, we need to make the choices as to how much more we want to make them learn, as opposed to other activities they can get engaged in.

Its easy to blame the system when the child is failing, and to some extent, teachers ALREADY do blame themselves, they feel bad about it. But how much of this is warranted?

I will do what I can to accompany my kids during their learning journey. It's a tough and long road ahead. At the end of the day, my kids are my pride and joy. Accepting them for what they are is crucial. šŸ˜„

It is meaningless to talk about a factor which is not within control.

I see, the elephant in the room is the kiasu attitude of parents, but instead of trying to deal with that and change attitudes, we tiptoe around it and try to placate instead.....what a great way to craft policy.

IMO, the adult elephants is NOT kiasu parents.. But other MOE policies are contribute to the unhealthy tuition phenomenon. Such as some teachers who moonlight(allowed by MOE) (and neglect school students) and some teachers who encourage students to go for tuition (less work for them to teach).

The kiasu parents are maybe the infant elephants.. significant, but not the biggest.

but anyway, what do you suggest to deal with the kiasu parents attitude? you or me educate them? No right?

It falls back to MOE to educate them, isn't it?

or come to KSP forum and bitch about kiasu parents and in the end, there is no constructive suggestions to deal with kiasium.

Enrichment/Tuition industry continues to prosper, kids suffer, and the product of the education system produces many well trained in exams(The KPI of tuition) but lacks capability.

FYI... There are teacherstoo, whom, do not teach well in good school too. I know that students from good school do go to tution too. Parents of those good school also play a part in teaching their kids too. Not just purely the school make the student shine. I believe there are alot of factors which make the student shine. School is just one part of it. Even send the kids to titution may not work too.

I don't feel it is over-regulating when cigarettes manufacturers are required by LAW to WARN users of the potential adverse effects of smoking to their potential customer.

                        The same principle applies.

Cigarettes have been proven to cause cancer so a warning is deemed necessary.

But tuition? Tuition is necessary for those who are weak in their subjects. It isn't evil.

                        I'm talking about principles..

Adequate Regulation, when it is needed, it not evil. Of coz, the main question is, it IS a problem now?

If many don't see it as a problem, then no issue lor.

But if many sees it (Tuition phenomenon) as a problem, then, some regulation is necessary.

And, you're talking about advertisement rite..? maybe not banning.. but surely some regulation is necessary?..

Go to casinos, it's your choice. But why casino cannot advertise? why casinos cannot operate shutter services in the heartlands? That, I feel, is OVER regulation.. but still.. it was there.
