Yes, no matter how ridiculous his defense might be, we must bear this in mind. In any criminal proceeding, the prosecution has the tougher job as they need to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt but for defense, they just need to raise a doubt.
To us, the accused person’s defense sounds laughable. However, if the prosecution do not have any concrete evidence to prove that he is lying, the judge will have no other choice but to discharge him and correctly in this case, not amounting to acquittal.
An innocent life is already lost. We cannot afford to cause the death of another unless we are 90-100% certain that he did it. He is facing a death penalty, not a fine. -

death sentence wrongly meted out cannot be reversed if the 'convict' has been hung
fine wrongly fined - any refund plus interest ? -

I think some compensation can be made if one is wrongly sentenced to jail. I remember there was a case involving two brothers, whereby one subsequently was acquitted after serving some time in jail. IIRC, the state offered some compensation.

For fine, so far never heard of anyone who is wrongly fined.
Yes, like what you say, death penalty is one that is non-reversible and thus, need to be more prudent. It is thus not surprising that all cases punishable by death, have to be trial in HIgh Court and if I am not wrong, even the accused person wants to plead guilty to a murder charge, he cannot do so.
Prosecution still have to provide the evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the person is indeed the murderer. So meaning, if there is no other evidence, apart from the accused admitting to it, likely he will be discharged not amounting to acquittal too.
Stand corrected on the above.
