      MumandMe:

Can you tell me the difference between the weekly enrichment math and phonics classes vs their daily kindy classes. I don't understand how the enrichment is able to complete the same cirriculum as the kindergarten since the enrichment is only a weekly session.

you're right. I agree with you.

i always wonder .... how those kids who attend once a week Saturday weekend enrichment for montessori Maths can complete the entire Montessori Maths curriculum before enter P1 - compared to those who practise daily from Monday - Friday, 45 minutes daily in a montessori 3 or 4 hrs kindergarten.

definitely those kids who practise 45 minutes minimal Maths daily will cover and learn much more, complete syllabus earlier.

perhaps montessori Phonics, still can. But Maths is a lot much tougher, compared to Phonics.

Phtthp, i thought i already clarified in my reply to MumandMe?

ie. the daily vs weekly lesson difference?

PS. Montessori schools do not do 45mins of Montessori time! :yikes:
We do Montessori ALL THE TIME. On top of that some of us/the centres add in the Thematic lessons/curriulum similar to the ones in mainstream so children are exposed as well. The Montessori Education has evolved much to stay relevant to the current mainstream education. Plus Montessori children do not just learn preschool education. The academic portion of Montessori covers up till upper primary and Montessori actually has curriculum for up to secondary education as well! The rest of the holistic portion of the Montessori Education guides children for life. :please:

        Hi buds

For phonics… he seems to know all the sounds… but how to incorporate that into pronouncing a word? I know there are word blend, but I am not sure how receptive my son is on the word blend… how do i test him on whether he knows or not? Or there isnt any need for test, just let him be?

Do you think flash card methods works?

Currently my elder boy is in a monte preschool. I love the way Math is taught in his school. Next year, however, I intend to register my younger one in a church kindy instead, due to cost constraint.

Can I know if any centres in the East offer Monte Math enrichment? I would like to enrol my younger in one.

          Thanks.

              For Montessori Maths,

              1. Are the teachers supposed to follow a sequence like :
              Stage 1 - addition
              Stage 2 - subtraction
              Stage 3 - multiplication
              Stage 4 - division?

My 4-yr-old son’s teacher taught him addition, then continued with multiplication. Is this normal?

              2. For addition, my DS uses his fingers to count but is limited to his 10 fingers (eg. 86 + 4, 86 + 10).
For addition like 86 + 15, how should it be taught? Vertical working?

Have you tried inquiring Josiah Montessori?

The Learning Curve at Tampines Mart might have it as well.

Go for Character if you already like it. One of our parents here has a boy there and raves about it. Supposedly one of the better Character Montessori centre around.

It can be done. Montessori Method offers flexibility. I suppose the teacher is exercising this flexibility to introduce multiplication first as the understanding of multiplication is based on addition concept as well. For example.. 2 X 4 is repeated addition in 2 + 2 + 2 + 2.

                    allcc6:
                    2. For addition, my DS uses his fingers to count but is limited to his 10 fingers (eg. 86 + 4, 86 + 10).
I do believe since he is four, they have yet to ask them to do double digit additions. However, to answer your question.. they will be exposed to other materials apart from the golden beads. They will work with the addition and subtraction board, stamp game, number bonds etc as they progress and more hands-on practice with the materials will help with the concrete experiences in Math which they can then later adapt into the abstract, which is the recording part (worksheets and the likes).

                    Yes.

I've also shared before the heart method. Lemme do a search and re-post it again here for you. Gimme some time to get back to you on this. :please:

                        Hi all,

I have been ploughing the thread for the last 3 nites but think i managed to reacd only till post 100 and kinda of zonked already.
I know someone, maybe Buds? mentioned some books to read up on montessori method or doing some activity with the child at home?
I cant remember which post it is on, but could someone please kindly guide me along?

I was from mainstream background as an educator for many years and left my job when my little one was born and i am enjoying every moment staying home with him.
He’s now 15 months and i am considering putting him in some playgroup or half day childcare for interaction and also for myself to work on some home based work.

I had a few rare occasions when the young ones who came into our school were from montessori backgroudn and my colleagues had commented how 'disruptive’they were cos they could not sit still in a class and was always roaming and i had wondered then, how prepared montessori trained children were.
I didnt had much contact with these young ones as i spent more time with the older age group.
In fact , my little one is truly my first experience in handling such a young kid:)

However, as i read up alittle more on montessori , and through observing my own boy, i believe that montessori truly is the way to go.
He stated exploring his spoon and bowl and one day i decided to just drop some pebbles in for him to scoop. I didnt realise then, that montessori trains life skills or develop their senses in a similar manner. Of course, its a far cry from what montessori does, but my son 'has perhaps indicated to me how he wishes to be schooled for the next few years:)

I live in the West and have already visted a few centres. Some are good, especiallly with the teacher and student ratio but may be a little too expensive for me to afford.

I am wonderign if i can truly help him gain some montessori awareness while letting him go through a mainstream playgroup until he reaches 4 , before putting him in a montessori kindergarten or cc then. Or would it be better to put him in now?
The maths montessori method does seem a little complicated to me. I am not sure if reading up will help be enough for me to teach me?
I did visit MMI at beauty world (formerly at ten mile) . I did like the relatively clean environment and bright lighting, but i wonder if they are too commercialised already.
The staff there kept assuring me that it would be good to put my son in when he turned 18 months instead of waiting till he was older.
Does any one have any experience with this?

thanks soo much in advamce, everyone.
