Nebbermind:
ya, not to worry, I was like you when I heard that from DS1 but he said as long as they pay attention in class, do their homework diligently, ask teachers if there is any doubt, everything should be fine.
Donch worry! Somehow those who got selected will manage!!dyh:

The selection process is meritocratic & rigorous.
If they have the aptitude and good life skills (able to plan, self-disciplined, open to new ideas, etc.), they should be able to do well at NUSHS and have a unique & enriching school life that could lead to very interesting occupations in the future. -
dagong99:
Are you sure?DS1 in Yr 1 now, if I have not mistaken, that's what DS1 told me when we were at Bras Basah, looking for A Level textbook as a guide for him.
My neighbour, whose DS2 is in Yr 6 now, told me when her DS2 in Yr 2, he was able to do his elder brother's A Level Math paper. But I think this is only for Math & Science, other subjects may not be so.
From my understanding, in Year 1, only for Bio they touch on some A level stuff . For Phy and Maths I am pretty sure it is O level stuff as I have seem the topics covered in the year 1 module for these. Chem too I think but I have not seen the full syllabus for it.
Perhaps your child is accelerated in some subjects ? -
Sun_2010:
No, DS1 didn't take any acceleration test (I think there is no acceleration for science subjects for Yr 1), just that he had finished reading the Chemistry O Level text during his P6 school holidays and wants to read A Level text, then while searching for it, we found that he had covered about half of the A Level text in school already.

my comments limited to the first 6 months when I compared DS text book (yr1) in NUSH to DD sec3 textbook in non-IP sec sch.
Physics and Chemistry topics similar for the first few (maybe 4-5) chapters. -
Wow, this year's DSA parents are very 'enthu', I have not seen this thread so active before!
Before we get carried away by all the fervor, please remember to go in with your eyes open, be realistic and not have too idealistic expectations of a school, be it NUSH/RI/HCI/RGS/NYGH or any of the good schools, then it will minimize the pain of transition from primary school to secondary school for your child. (believe me, it's not easy for some!)
For those still in doubt whether their kid is interested enough in Science, I think don't just look at the primary school results. Anybody who has gone through primary school Science with their children will know it does NO HELP to inspire kids to love science, they just force kids to write answers in a certain way to get marks. In fact, DD totally put off Science in primary school, until her teacher put her in the E2K program, then she realized Science can be experienced in a different way.
If your child has been selected for camp, just let him/her go enjoy the process. If they come back talking about it with this 'spark' in their eyes, you know it must be something special. -
Sun_2010:
I think both 'Sun2010' and 'dagong99' are right in their own way. The topics in NUSH are not structured the same way as other schools, so some A level topics are already taught at Y1&2, while some O level topics are taught only at Y3/Y4. DD said she saw some Y3 Math worksheets and said they were not difficult.

Parents of prospective students needn't be too worried. Like what other NUSH parents shared, somehow, the selection process will be able to sift out kids who can cope. Anyway, they have to cater to a range of abilities, not all 150+ kids in the same cohort are geniuses!
The Y1 worksheets and exam papers also don't look like they are out to kill the students, not like some other schools which set really difficult questions and stress the kids out. Maybe Y4/Y5 parents have a different experience to share? -

Yes ! If selected for the camp, just go and enjoy the session.

There are no right or wrong answers; just participate and share your views etc during the \"camp\".
DS enjoyed the \"camp\" but he felt he did not contribute much during the discussion and thought he will not make it but he got a CO for DSA. -
