Is P3 really too late for competitve swimming. My hubby says that all u need is 6 mths training and if the child is good enough…can get up to speed! That was during his time 30 yrs ago - he only started to learn swimming in P1 and by P3 he was swimming for school n club - he was in PA club…famous for their Junie Sng.

I was told by my friends recently that MOE new policy now is at secondary level, every child must have at least a Bronze cert in swimming, otherwise, they will need to undergo compulsory swimming lessons.

My friends also feel it's better to get a cert b4 entering sec sch, as going for swimming lessons at sec 1 will be hectic (need to cope with many subjects) and troublesome (own transport to swimming complex), and may be bad for child's morale esp if most of his classmates need not attend.

Anyone with can verify this info and share experience ?

Yes I heard the same thing too and would recommend regardless of this ruling that your child at least go for bronze exam to be assured of water safety and doing it earlier is better because the kids have more time when younger than older.

Is never too late to learn lor. Even adult can pick up swimming in less than 3 months. No worries... his age is still ideal for learning swimming.

I just taught a group of class from this school but all primary 3 few weeks ago at bukit batok pool. Maybe only for pri 3?

It will also depend on the school. Different schools start with different levels. Some school only started the swimming program recently for a certain level eg P3 so all the older students that are past that level might not have the swimming program scheduled in. Only the younger students will go through the program when they reach P3

Alot would voice down to the individual and the training that he has received. When you start at a younger age, you have more time to build up a good foundation. However, it would not mean that someone who starts later would lose out. The one who starts later could be more \"talented\" in swimming and could catch up.

what is the registration procedure and requirement if we don’t go through the coach. I supposed it should be cheaper and efficient that way as long as we get the exam requirement right (where to get this information? from particular website?)

This is an example of requirement for bronze test.

Objectives
Enhance water confidence of swimmers
Learn about water safety and water survival so that swimmers can save themselves and prevent accidents in water

Test Content
Straddle/tuck jump from side pool
Swim 50m in pyjamas
Drown proof 1 minute
Tread water 3 minutes
Undress pyjamas in water and make float
Swim 400m using any strokes, with 1 surface dive and
swimming at least 5m submerged
Climb out from deep end without assistance/steps

If your kid can swim arleady, then training with coach will learn pyjamas tricks which is required for the test.

I can understand garmen thinking esp for boys having to go thro NS.
If the boys don’t clear NAPFA and knows how to swim b4 they serve NS in combat vocations - they will suffer more.
1st sit:
When I was a trainee in NS, I didn’t know how to swim properly. In one of the training session to test your confidence, each of us in No. 4 dress with boots was made to go up the 10m platform to go jump into the pool.
Me at 10m platform looking down: "I can’t swim"
Instructor: "jump!"
Silly me buay kia si just jump. Thought I would drown on the way down , but thank GOD Archimedes Principle n natural buoyancy works.

2nd sit - river crossing:
We were being trained for river crossing using a rope across the river n using an infantry assault bridge. Before this exercise, we were instructed to get into the river with SBO n rifle and just float about. Trust me, it’s scary if one can’t swim cos’ u are thinking all this weight is gonna drag me down.
With the assault bridge, there is no lifeline or guyline - and u are probably thinking what if I misstep and fall into the river.

So…please teach your children to swim.
