TOP choice for my children's Sec Sch

But I guess, the choice should be the one you would most likely choose after considering all the factors important to you/child Otherwise, we'll probably see almost everyone choosing that few schools.

Frankly, was hoping to see if any parents would choose based on culture, cca, curriculum etc....

For me, starting of the year I was aiming RV cos' of proximity, next choice was Nanhua. But after visiting HCI, I realised I really liked the Chinese feel and the green compound......RV and Nanhua feels a little 'cold' as compared. Guess, that's the furthest I will go so that kids dun have to spend too much time on travelling.

My choice would be RI or catholic high. They are the nearest branded sec sch to home.

Both are good (boys) schools, in their own ways..
I prefer boys' schools for my boys, coz dont want them to be involved in BGR at so young a age..

Actually I prefer catholic high, but it's further away hence, RI is named first. If there are more choices, RI may not be among my top three choices. I would be very happy if my child could be enrolled in nush or hci but they are too far away.

I'm Sec 3, from Maris Stella High. The transition period from Pri Sch to Sec School is definitely not easy, and normally I get dismissed from school at around 4pm. Still got homework, studying to do. Not forgetting CCAs. So distance would really be an important factor in the selection of Secondary Schools.

To me, 50 min is quite reasonable as going to school and home are peak hours. Some ppl may have to take a feeder, take a train and walk to school.

We live 10min drive from DD school, they already take abt 50 min to return home if they miss the bus, and abt 30 min if they are lucky.

Why is there a need to create hype or publicity for those popular school? Everyone (whether in KSP or not) are already aware of them anyway.
Also dun see how this poll can create comfort.

Anyway, it was a pure simple poll to see what are other parents thinking. Also, perhaps may get some parents to start considering about the distance of the chosen school. I'm glad some kids have shared their view. Personally, I will not consider schools that are too far.

DD1 will only be taking PSLE 2 years down the road :scared: but she knows what \"mummy's dream secondary school is for her\"! Dream because 1) Mummy's time - never study hard so unable to enter RV; 2) Now that this mummy's dream school is so near home, definitely mummy wish for her to be able to enter so to save time save $$

But is still remains as a \"dream\" because we have not visited any Secondary schools open-house and get to see how Secondary-school life is all about. For the time being, only consider proximity But, there again, back to reality - it is still her responsibility and duty to study hard; be the best she can and Mummy here to support! :rahrah: :rahrah:

I personally think an hr on traveling is ok, IF it covers both ways - to and from school. If one trip is an hour, I think precious time is wasted on commuting.

You might need to travel a bit further to a better or top school, unless you don't mind an average neighbourhood school. I personally think not more than an hour (one way) of traveling is still acceptable. We also have to take our kid's preference & ability into consideration.

For all schools, primary or secondary, proximity will be my first priority.

Nothing beats getting home quick for a home-cooked meal or a good shower and ample rest plus time to "nuar".

Easy for me to 'stalk/hijack' him.....whahaha. I dun have to wake up soooooo early too :snooze:
Next I look at nearer ones such as Nanhua, NUSH, ACS(I). DS didn't care about which school he'll go.....but after HCI, both of us changed our heart 变心 :oops:, my only concern is .... DS chinese standard.

But like you said.....\"dream\".....until PSLE is over, won't know where to place him exactly. But can dream first lah For DD, probably the same few schools to consider.....RV, Nanhua, NY, NJC, Crescent. Am also thinking, should I let DS go co-ed school so that the sister can join him a year later....

I would rank kid's ability and wishes as the top criterion, and parents' dreams as the last. Proximity is important, but not the most important for me - I travelled 1 hr each way during my schooldays, so I don't feel that anything under 1 hr is too long. I have 2 girls with different abilities - for one, we chose a less challenging school to apply to as we know she will be more comfortable with less pressure and a slower pace. For the other, who is a high achiever, we told her to aim high as we think competition and challenge will be good for her. Both have taken our advice, and both schools should be within 1 hr travelling time from our home. Our own 'dream schools' we consider unimportant; although our younger girl will eventually go to my husband's JC, that wasn't really a consideration. We did not consider any SAP schools as our girl's Chinese is bad, we prefer single-sex schools but didn't rule out co-ed, and we didn't opt for the math/science schools as my girl hasn't narrowed down her interests yet.

I too travelled 1 hour each way during my schooldays......and I had enjoyed my morning rides (I would leave house 5.30am to escape from morning crowd and would open up the bus windows and feel the cold air....back then, only some are air-con) :love:
But I do believe the work-load for kids these days are heavier....hence the concern over proximity. Similarly, my threshold is 1 hour.

For DS, I'm not as concerned. For DD, I hope she does not fall asleep on bus. I had met many types of molester before :mad: and hence, I would have to teach her how to recognise signs of danger and be FIERCE and make noise when necessary :nunchuk: :?:

Is a band 3 school consider neighborhood? What which to choose ? A band 4 school ten min walk away, a band 3 school 30 min bus ride away? Or a band 2 school 50+min train + walk away?

If your kid's PSLE results are within the range of a Band 2 school, then don't bother with the Band 4 school. Between the Band 2 and 3 school, go for the one which would give your kid better value add.
