Sorry to say this but this list to me panders to the materialism and vanity of a person, it makes the soul shallow. Unfortunately, you are indeed spot on on what can possibly draw or motivate people to the sports arena. Again, idealistically I prefer a true sportsman to enjoy the sports and want to take the sport to its peak as a goal.... this list is just the bonus that comes with it.... JMHO.
1. Warmly welcome by the public, creating a public frency and being received by a senior member of the cabinet upon arrival at the airport.
2. A sum of $1 million.
3. Commercial endorsements thus more money.
4. National day honours list for significant contribution to Singapore.
5. Tea with the President and Prime Minister of the day.
6. Recognise in our history.
7. A host of other benefits including opening of doors previously impossible, perk from commercial establishments as many want to be your friends.
Sorry I know I am idealistic... :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: -

:rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: No, I meant it as a serious question, but I came up with my own answer to entertain myself.
:rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: To think I took your question seriously....should have known better from concern2.... ok one up for you.ksi:

But still, there are several Freestyle races. My trick answer to this is: She would have broken the Men's records which would cause a war

You know ah, I think these days kids are so 'nuah' that sports is good for them physically. Otherwise, ask them to carry a bit of things or walk some distance only they complain.. Whether they are spotted or not sometimes depends on luck also. Some kids are naturally active. I hate to see that fire get put down by over-emphasis on academics.
The other thing is it is usually the parents who are concerned about the academics because they want to be guaranteed a second career should the sports career fail. Life is not a bed of roses choosing the sports route. Unless one is consistently outstanding and detemined to excel under all conditions, no amount of external support can beat the internal fire. -
My tongue in cheek response to ur list of benefits:
Edureach:
Now for a moment imagine if u hve one kid who is exceedingly naturally gifted in any olympic sport, why not send them to Singapore Sports Sch and forget about the top mainstream schs which are already clouded with so many academic high performers. Off course there are risks but consider the following benefits if he/she wins a gold medal:
1. Warmly welcome by the public, creating a public frency and being received by a senior member of the cabinet upon arrival at the airport.
There r enuf crowds everywhere oredi!
2. A sum of $1 million.
not enuf to buy house.
3. Commercial endorsements thus more money.
limited sponsorship deals in SG
4. National day honours list for significant contribution to Singapore.
5. Tea with the President and Prime Minister of the day.
Wat for? mee siam also no hum.
6. Recognise in our history.
A footnote maybe. How many children recognise or remember Tan Howe Liang?
7. A host of other benefits including opening of doors previously impossible, perk from commercial establishments as many want to be your friends.
Oh yeah, THL used to open doors at National Stadium.
The above is not exhausive and there are many others not being outlined. In short, yr kid will be treated like a national treasure far better than a President Scholar.
u wish. -
Nowadays academic prowess alone doesn’t mean much without robost character development and other positive life traits.
I can make this statment b’cause i already hve one who performed well in national exams. No big deal really! -

Nowadays one can't reach d pinnacle of d more popular sports on luv/enjoyment of d sport alone.
Much sacrifices n full devotion to training n competitions r needed. -

A-Ha! So what's holding everyone back?concern2:

Think for an olympic gold medallist, the issue of uni is irrevelant as he/she will hve a palce reserved. In fact, our unis will be clamouring to hve him/her as one of their students not withstanding their academic results.
Must be exceedingly talented. Hard training can only go so far, up to SEA games level. To win an Asian games gold medal is already an outstanding achievement.
The succesful candiate is a national treasure! Hope that the day will come for Singapore within my life time.[/quote]That is so true, Edureach.
To add, natural endowment like what you are born with and physical built is also a factor.
If we continue to let the kids sit in front of the table or computer, they are just going to get shorter and more myopic.

What I mean is even when one makes sacrifices and full devotion to training and competitions, it is because they love it and want to push themselves towards it...not because of the lure of the above list of perks.
I know young sporty people who would continue to train when sick because once they are in it, they forget the sickness and could function normally. That is the spirit of loving the sport a lot. -

For many sports, its a short-lived career even if they make it.

For many promising young males, their progress r impeded by NS.
