We welcome our President who is in London watching the Olympics to start a President Sportman/Sportswoman scholarship.

Suggest dis Scholarship includes a 12 year NS deferment for males.

Why 12 years? It would be called reservists then... :rotflmao:

For many sports, its a short-lived career even if they make it.
For many promising young males, their progress r impeded by NS.

It is so true about the short-lived part. Most world class sportsmen can take part in at most 3 Olympics and they become history in terms of active sportsmen. I believe a national team member has good reasons to defer NS which the country will happily support....so not an issue for outstanding boys in sports.

concern2, defer NS not an incentive leh...still have to complete just later only..

No, Ksi, the word I used was \"EXEMPTED\"!!! šŸ˜‰[/quote]Ah so...I thought it was a temporary exemption. But NS is good for them right? no?

During my time, national sportmen r given soft postings n they r allowed time off for training n competitions, but normally no deferment.

Ang Peng Siong was once posted to my reservist unit. Also not given any specific assignments - just passing time to finish his ICT.

But that is precious time wasted while competitors are busy training.

Our 35% President's son was granted 12 years deferment to complete his undergraduate n postgraduate studies overseas n returned to a soft posting at a Defence Agency to continue his research work.

To be at the podium in olympics, definately needs to train full time. So if anyone has a ds who is a potential medallist, NS is not an issue. We are talking about the most outstanding sportsman who can do Singapore proud at international arena not national sportsmen.

This arrangement sounds good as well. Good to know MINDEF supported this already when the focus on sports was not there. However, given that there is a Sports School now producing more sportsmen, perhaps they can consider deferment if they are training for major events like SEA games and Olympics.

Btw, during your time, you pal with APS or not huh?
Motivated by him to train for 6 packs?
