Oi :pokeeye: , don't poke people's grandfather ok? :heresmyfish:concern2:
:? Funny bit of history there. LKY didn't put an end to World War II. But then again, I know what you mean by appreciating the peace we have now.
u remained clear-headed amidst all d adulation. :hi5:
I too wondered how useful can one be a translator for d Japanese during d Japanese occupation if one is only fluent in English n Malay n presumably not conversant in d Chinese dialects nor Japanese.
Maybe mychildren has the same grandfather as I or this is the common tactic used during Japanese occupation...
My grandfather also helped bridge communication, maybe he knew some Japanese language but he was definitely conversant in Chinese dialects, and he was also threatened to be shot by the gun by the Japs. :yikes: -
Funz:
That (highlighted in blue) is 100% true. I hope he is well. While the day may come when we have to finally bid him goodbye. I do hope that he is well and that we will see him at tomorrow's NDP.
The decisions he made, good and bad were all made base on all the situation and the information he had then, and what he could foresee. It is easy for us to sit here and be critical, now that things have unfolded, and say he should have done this or that instead of what he did. Hindsight as we always say is 20/20. -

Dat's d intriguing part.Lilac66:
Same thots running in my mind actually... but then how do you explain the tweet by the SPH journalist Tessa Wong ?
If d intention of her tweet was stop d rumour mill either under instructions or of her own volition, why did she stopped short of posting a confirmation of d meeting or better yet, a photo of LKY in d office in a follow-up tweet today?
Doing dat will extinguish d wild-fire immediately n let u folks sleep in peace tonite.
True... I see that she hasn't updated her tweet since 7th Aug. -

Is it an unidentified reliable source?Lilac66:
Funny leh, I just heard from a friend (also from reliable source) it's not a rumour. So which reliable source is reliable. :?
But the mystery will be unravelled tomorrow. I do hope he'll appear

Err.. it's an unreliable identified source, I guess.

:yikes: You are talking about your real real grandfather or OUR grandfather? :scratchhead: getting confused here..
My grandfather also helped bridge communication, maybe he knew some Japanese language but he was definitely conversant in Chinese dialects, and he was also threatened to be shot by the gun by the Japs. :yikes: -

One thing I agree is that his impact is not the stopping of WWII of course but his building of nation after WWII. -

That's the good thing about sharing. We learn more from each other! :hi5:

No intention to contradict that. One thing I agree is that his impact is not the stopping of WWII of course but his building of nation after WWII.

Ur grandfather has a lot of explaining to do!
In one of Donny Yenβs Ip Man movies (based on semi biographical accounts of Ip Manβs life),
Gordan Lam played d role of a Japanese translator who was scorned as a traitor but
ultimately redeemed himself by sacrificing himself for his ppl.
His rationale for crossing over to d enemy was he has to feed his family;
try justifying dat with Lim Bo Sengβs family n those who volunteered in Force 136 n many others who put country before self during d War.ksi:
Its a logical connection dat one has to be fluent in at least d languages/dialects to be translated to be able to work effectively as a translator.
My grandfather also helped bridge communication, maybe he knew some Japanese language but he was definitely conversant in Chinese dialects, and he was also threatened to be shot by the gun by the Japs. :yikes:
u shd know dis better than most as u hv done translation work urself.
My point here is let's not take things at face value. There r questionable gaps.
