MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni

IMHO, ALL the remaining places in the primary school should be balloted out, but with additional ballot slips as follows:

Phase 2A(1) - parent was former student and joined alumni, or School Advisory/Mgmt Committee member
SCs: alumni +2 ballot slips, SAC +3 ballot slips
PRs: +1 ballot slip (alumni or SAC)

Phase 2A(2) - parent has studied in the primary school of choice, or
parent is a staff member of the primary school of choice
SCs: +1 ballot slip,
PR studied in school: nil, PR staff member only: +1 ballot slip

Phase 2B - PV, church/clan endorsement, active community leader
SC PV: +3 ballot slips, PR PV: +1 ballot slip
church/clan/community leader: +1 ballot slip

Phase 2C
SCs: +5 ballot slips
PRs: +1 ballot slip

Distance from school
<1km - SCs: +5 ballot slips, PRs: +1 ballot slip
1km-2km - SCs: +3 ballot slips. PRs: nil
>2km - SCs: +1 ballot slip. PRs: nil

PRs Limit to max 2 ballot slips from all categories

E.g.'s

A) an SC who is alumni, involved in church/clan but >2km can get:
+2 (alumni) +1 (church/clan) +5 (as SC) +1 (>2km) for a total of 9 ballot slips.

B) an SC, non-alumni and <1km gets:
+5 (as SC) +5 (<1km) = 10 ballot slips

C) a PR, alumni, church/clan and <1km gets:
2 ballot slips (PR Limit)

I am trying to propose a system that rewards effort & involvement with the school, makes a CLEAR distinction between SCs and PRs, narrows the gap between alumni and non-alumni, provides some reward for proximity to school, while injecting an element of chance for 'outsiders' (non-alumni, PRs with a dream, living a little further but willing to make effort etc.) to land a place in the school.

Under the current absolute priority system, there is no HOPE at all for pple in certain categories.

Disclaimer: I'm sure there are flaws in such a system which I haven't thot thru in this quick brainstormer, so any feedback is welcomed!

I don't like the ballot slips idea. Some people who are unlucky will not get in regardless of the number of ballot slips they get. However, some super lucky people who has only 1 ballot slip may get in.

haha, no lah Just hoping for a P1 Reg system that offers positive possibilities..

The current pro-alumni P2A phases, ironically, while securing your DS/DD a place at your alma mater, may also limit your choices.

This year, I really admire the courage of the HPPS old boy who graciously gave up his DD's place at HPPS for 2C balloting at RGPS (just outside his house) at the last minute. He is clearly focused on the positive. Imagine the internal turmoil or family pressure he may have faced in his decision. :slapshead:

Even the fortunes of primary schools depend on 'luck', or whatever you call it.

E.g. 1 The following are schools started in the 1950s:
Princess Elizabeth, Bt Panjang, Bukit Batok East/West & Rosyth

Which is the 'lucky' school chosen to host GEP and is today a 'hot' sch?

E.g. 2
Pei Hwa and Shuqun, up to mid 80s, were located within walking distance of each other. In 1986, Shuqun moved to Jurong and surrendered the area to Pei Hwa. The rest is history.

So whether we have a 'good' alma mater for our kids also depends on the luck of the draw for our schools, which we have no control over - Gov policies, relocation, demographics, etc. :sad:

And isn't it in our national culture to buy 4D/Toto/etc.

I get my dd to join in the fun. Darn.. My wife already starting tearing at the 5th draw. Policy is adding a lot of stress rather than remember as a milestone experience for my kids. Perhaps may laugh at it yrs later. But definitely not funny going thru it.

i have seen posts of students having to wake up at 5am to take school bus to school because they live in bedok and their school is at bukit timah. they got in the school cos of their parents.

Haiyah - my kids all woke at 5.30-5.45am even though we stay 10mins drive from school. Need to share bathroom to shower, brush teeth, sloooowly dream over their breakfast. But they like to leave the house by 6.30am or 6.40am, lor, and reach school before 7am. Good too - no jam.

at least your kids take only 10 mins to reach home after school. the poor kid who live far away have to take about 45 mins to 1 hour to reach home. that is why it is better if they live at least within 2km from the school... better if within 1km!

Yes, I know of a family who stays in Serangoon but attending NYPS.
Daddy works in upp Bukit Timah...so it's considered on the way.
