Where is hokkiengirl (I think she taught IP school before) to chip in on why IP schools prefer GEPpers to mainstreamers? What are the attributes?

        Calling Hokkiengirl…

          HVR:
          jtoh:

The vast majority of students in IP and IS schools are from the mainstream, so they are given equal opportunities to be in IP. Schools like RI/RGS probably only have 20% of GEPpers in their population. NYGH only 5%? DHS <5%?

If you think that DSA is an unfair basis for selection into IP because some (very few) GEPpers score below the COP, then maybe we should not allow some sports and aesthetics students to be allowed entry via DSA because some of them have T-scores far below the COP of the school. Some going in with as much as 40 points below the school's COP.

GEPpers are better able to adapt to an IP environment bec of the way they were taught in primary school. I won't bother to explain how but sufficeth to say that IP schools recognize this.

This is fact and finally someone mentioned this. Why only 'target' gepers saying they deprive other in mainstream a place if they DSA into IS/IP schools but their PSLE scores are below COP of the school? Even for mainstreamers, many of them did not meet the COP of the IS/IP schools despite successfully entered via, ironically, DSA. Cut the gepers some slack, please.

Know of at least one Gepper who scored 240+ got into RGS cos already received CO for DSA.

I think if u use academic to get in sec sch, u shd compare academic among all the applicants who applied thru academic n shd not compare with applicants who use sport/music/art. Don’t forgrt that they have to spend fair enough times to be one of the top n will b spending a lot of time on this in sec. U mean Gep n academic r not the same?

There are main streamers who have received CO but have scored less than the cut off point too.

PSLE gives equal weight age to all subjects while DSA is domain specific. So a low A in one subject is enough to pull the T-score down. While the child's speciality maybe in one domain- among the top in maths/ science/ language. DSA also takes in other factors like leadeship, CCA role etc. After all these are important traits too along side academics. The school has the autonomy to decide its criteria. And I think most schools are doing a good job of choosing the niche. If all Sec1 selection is done based on pure PSLE score leads to same kind of students mostly the ones good in all subjects and sidelines those that are exceptional in certain areas

DSA is thus necessary and a step in the right direction. While it does lead to another set of problems, which need to be tackled, scraping this in the name of leveling the playing field is just not right.

Let me also add that I do not have any kids in Gep. And Dd is one of those kids who is very good in all subjects and has done very well in Psle. So this is not a case of my view based on my kid.
