Is GEP really necessary?

They just disappear from the education system, but might be very successful in life later on in their lives .. we just do not know.
(d) HA kids who are not passionate about their study and who forget to wake up will disappear.

Perhaps it's coz u didn't see GEP as a die-die must have. Your kids in pretty good schools, ya?
I tend to agree with this.
The child must have some innate ability to understand concepts at a higher level even if they were to go through training.
As a matter of fact, I never knew such preparatory classes existed (such exorbitant fees too!) until I joined this KS forum.
Getting transfer out may not be such a good thing sometimes...lose your affiliation status and come PSLE....PANIC!!! :stupid: -

In an average Sg family without special exposure from home, My guess would close to where he is now. Atleast the national scene if not the international.Chenonceau:
Rightly or wrongly... I had assumed that Lim Jeck owed his achievements to his parents. Why would the MOE claim credit for LJ's achievements in mainstream? In primary school, in a class of between 40 to 44, I doubt he was much better taught Math than others. In mainstream, would he have achieved what he did to get into NUSH WITHOUT mathematician parents?
When students do poorly in mainstream, it is the parents' fault. When students shine in mainstream, the system is robust?

This statement is response to which question of mine above? I don't quite see the link to my comment.I believe his mother has made it clear that he would suffer the GEP English.

http://wwwdontmesswith6a.blogspot.sg/2012/08/mad-about-maths.htmlBtw his parents are not mathematicians, they own an IT business.
The newspaper clearly states that the parents did the enriching in Primary school. The school looked good because he won. His parents enjoy Math... like Math... good at Math (so are Mathematicians). Maybe in secondary, the school was important in bringing out his talent. But certainly not BEFORE he got to NUSH. So I still don't see how this shows up as MOE's success.
If his parents had not enriched him in Primary school, he would be nowhere today... maybe in and out of IMH?
Perhaps I trust LJ ( a child's passion ) and the primary school he studied more. -

Have not been following LJ story. Did MOE claim credit for LJ’s achievement?

No, they did not. I gave credit that the screening test was sound enough to not put him in the programme and get concussion from the English, his mum also said the rigors of English would not suit him. So I highlight this as a positive thing of MOE as opposed to the other view that screening was not accurate and screened LJ out..... -

There's no 501st kid. Bec that kid didn't take up GEP, there are then only 499 kids in GEP that year. No waiting list.Gep has started since 1984 ? And yet we have so little information like cost effective analysis from MOE.
I have met this person , at p1 he tried to discuss with me war strategies after reading tons of war books in K2. P3 got selected into GEP, PSLE top 5 in Spore, Sec 1 won individual awards in interschool sports competition , Upper sec top cohort in IP school for few subjects , spends his free time teaching friends who are weaker in studies. And in actual fact, he Didnt attend the GEP program because his parents opted him out . (the 501th kid must be thanking him for the spot) I have to read 2ppaamm posts to Finally understand where his parents are coming from. And like LJ, he doesn't need the program to flourish?
In the same vein as 2ppaamm , as long as there is fairness across the board , many people will be very grateful. Most if not all parents will like their poor kids to be stimulated. , to have more attention from the school to max their potential . And many kids are bored too ( maybe teachers boring ....)
And yes I likeSheldon Tan!!

So maybe we should have NUS Primary School for Math and Science Geniuses, and Primary School for Gifted Literary and Linguistics Talents and School for Pre-Teen Chinese Scholars? :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
the gripe here is not the support from NUSH, but before he enters NUSHSun_2010:
LJ has good support of his sec school, so how come it becomes MOE's failure I dont see. Yes he was not talent spotted early on but once his calibre was known , he has been provided with good support. -

Since I can't have holistic education, I rather opt with generalist. But if they display certain strengths in a particular domain, I hope there are silo centers to engage them. But they still remain in their current schools. That's my wish list I shared earlier.

Then u will see the pre teen Chinese scorerS r all PRC from china! So the mainstream schools r for all rounded pupils? R they gifted? Being all rounded r not gifted. Why not? One mom has already said it is difficult to score >262. Not fair. - I can hear this resounding... Kekeke...
