So, RI assigns the sec 1 students based on the t-score? Is it the same for those GEP students? Anyway, does it really matter which class a student assigned to? Better teachers? Better class size?friendship:
A boy scored 266 in PSLE, why posted to 1D ?
not unusual, not the first time, won't be the last time
266 is just 5 points above the cop, and is only slightly above average (mean = 265)
My ds is the bochap type for his study. I nagged at him a lot for his SA1 as the result is important for DSA purpose. Now, he has got a CO, I am not \"motivated\" to nag at him anymore and hope he will be self-motivated one day. To me, PSLE is just a placement exam. After gettting a CO, does it really matter whether the t-score is 250, 260 or 270? Am I wrong? :? -

I'm sure he'll find out from his teachers or friends. I wouldn't worry. My friend's son was doing loads of Chinese revision papers in Sec 3 given by the school.
Was worry more of the spoken of Mandarin. Heard in HCI they have programme like morning zaobao reading, Chinese current affair interview, debate... to keep the students up in their language spoken. Wonder what RI have similarly...keroppi:
Undarstand oral is a big component in CL O level and there is no oral inHcl. So will ri students neglect or some may forget how to speak mandarin over time... good or bad?
Bad. Decided not to tell him this piece of news, unless he finds out himself. Guess I'll have to act dumb and pretend there's Os at the end of year 3 to get his \"almost non-existent\" momentum for Chinese revision going. Not sure how long I can keep this up though -

officially they tell you there is no specific sorting of kids by t-scores
but it is also known those high / very high mainstream scorers are placed in the GEP classes. and in RI the last 7 or 8 classes are comprised mainly of GEPpers sprinkled with some non-GEPpers. Reason being they have done RE in primary school so it is easier for them to move at the same pace while the other classes will also go over RE but at usual pace. mainstreamers placed in GEP classes are monitored for their ability to keep pace with the class and if needed, they are given extra coaching in order to move at the same pace as the GEPpers .... so far I heard no need for extra coaching after the teachers made the assessment
this is only for RI, not sure about other IS / IP schools
to be politically correct, the t-score does not matter once a CO is on hand, but some kids like to prove that they are just as good via PSLE exam and so still work very hard to make sure their have a high t-score to justify the CO....self proofing -

Amendment… Sorry for the wrong info posted earlier… Checked with DS… (No 1N 1O 1S, and should be 267 & above, not 265)… Number of pupils per class varies… DS’class has 28 pupils…
For Sec-1 this year…
1A & 1B are from Sports.
1C 1D 1E 1F 1G 1H 1I are from Mainstream (P6 Mainstreamers).
1J 1K 1L 1M 1P 1Q 1R 1T are from GEP (P6 GEPpers), and top scorers from P6 Mainstream (267 & above).
ALL doing the same stuff (maybe except the Sport classes?). No difference between GEPpers & Mainstreamers in RI. -
May I know if any Year 1s sign up for the Taiwan Immersion Programme? Any info on that?
Firefly, vlim, Ms Tay, did your DS sign up? -

I think generally the sec 1 students are put into classes based on their t-score although there are a few cases of randomness in some classes. This is based on ds's observation for his year. Not sure whether it is the same every year. The kids will be in the same class for sec 1 and sec 2. Different classes have different dynamics, I heard the top top ones are very competitive and some classes can be a little noisier than the others. As for the teachers, I think it is random.
