Surprise that some mummies are keen to get this year Prelim papers. Some schools only get back their Prelim results this week & the papers will probably out next week. Less than a month to PSLE & still receiving homework from school. Can find time to do? Why stress the poor kids?
We did do the Prelim papers of other schools in the Sept \"hols\" of 2011 [ bought the full suite version from Jeremy Papers]; but it is absolutely correct that you must see if doing this will help your child or merely add stress.
By this last leg of the PSLE in 2011, we were practically on our own time-table of revision. School was for DD to play and meet her friends so some days she went to school and on other days she didn't -- so we had time. All the more at this last stage, where the homework was deemed not that useful for DD, we did it after we had done our own revision material. I was more than prepared for DD to complete and hand this in after the PSLE if necessary.
DD did look somewhat tired out by this time so I sorted the Sept 2011 Prelim papers out and she did only what I felt were \"reasonable\" papers --- more for her engines to continue at their steady high hum rather than \"full steam ahead\". NYPS papers did not make this \"reasonable paper\" test and remained in their pristine state at the end of our PSLE 2011.
Mrswongtuition generously shared papers from schools not necessarily represented by Jeremy's Papers and we did some of those too.
By this time, I was just interested in keeping DD's form in shape and to \"inspire\" her somewhat flagging spirits, I stacked all the papers she had tackled into one giant mountain and told her \" You conquered this Everest - just a little more to go!\". Afterall,...

I know many Mums and Dads out there would already have seen your P6 DC mature through this P6 journey. I remember that in this last leg I cried mixed tears of joy and sadness as I saw DD learn first hand that :
Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.

[quote=\"sea\"]Hi parents,

I’m very concerned that our kids don’t get burned out at this last stage. It’s really like a marathon and if you know how marathon runners train, they do alot of resting during the last stage of preparation and run less than their usual.
DS has been very much on his own and this Prelim’s results will show whether our strategy of doing less is getting more results. I’m already quite concerned that even with my releasing so much, he suddenly had headaches the past few nights with no other symptoms. Thought he might be having anxiety attacks but he seems very relaxed especially since his mummy has been off his back for many weeks already. He seems fine after a panadol. Today is last science prelim paper. In the morning he complained of headache again. Took panadol and I told him to go and run a couple of rounds at the school field. I suspect not enough oxygen circulating. I remembered when I used to have headaches, I would go for a run and felt good relief after that. Hopefully it helps him. He hasn’t called me to pick him up from school so I guess he must be fine.
In the coming 4 weeks, I’m hoping to help DS learn the marathoner’s attitude, spirit and discipline (even though I’ve never run a marathon myself!!). It’s good nutrition, good sleep, good exercise and then do a few quality pieces of work, fill in the gaps and belief in yourself. That’s really all you can do. Add more stress to the child and you can be sure it will backfire. And of course, lots of hugs and tell him I’ll love him no matter what happens. -
My son is at home today to clear up last week's tuition hw. Nothing done bcos of prelim revision. Classmate told him they were piled with past year papers for homework today. Yest last paper for prelim...today tons of hw :faint:
Wonder if the approach used is correct, ie piling kids with past year papers.
I remember how my son had headaches almost everyday in early Aug bcos of PSLE oral and prelim. By doing paper after paper, will the kids burn out? This is something we cannot afford to happen at this point. A burnt out child is as good as not sitting for psle which is just 1 month away.
Quality work is more impt than quantity. Sufficient sleep/rest, nutrition, vitamin C is what we mums can give...and not to forget, lots of TLC
Prelim results should be returned shortly...with most schools setting tough 'tough wake up' ones, we parents have to remind ourselves not to be harsh. -

Wow.. Janet can't wait till PSLE marking days already. :rotflmao: I can understand. Going on a week day can avoid the crowd & save queuing up time. Just hope the weather will be fine.

Thank you dear! This is EXACTLY what we are doing. We're on our own revision schedule. We customize fully and throw what we think does not suit us. The one size fits all school homework can tire the child even as we at home help him/her to plug some weaknesses last minute.mummy so kiasu:

DS goes to school to play... he has his weekends off... we choose papers to do judiciously. We do what makes sense and junk the rest whilst also ensuring he has time to watch interesting documentaries from the library... and he is now reading a book on What Happens to the Brain When We Tell Lies.
The focus now is less on new learning or last minute cramming than to keep the brain processes well oiled and in shape. Gentle toning exercises now... but daily.
