thought only 5 ways, to add up to 6 :-

      1\t5
      2\t4
      3\t3
      4\t2
      5\t1

you have 7 ways - is it because you’ve included these 2 below ?
      0\t6
      6\t0

but then test question state "There must be at least a yellow or blue ball", so need to exclude these 2. Hence, 5 ways only.

wah biang ! Now, P1 qn a bit "chim & tricky". They actually test whether children understand English what it mean by "at least a …" ie. "1 or more"

Thanks phtthp but I'm thinking:

0yellow 6blue – Don’t it meet the “at least a yellow or blue ball” – there is at least a blue ball right?

6yellow 0 blue - Don’t it meet the “at least a yellow or blue ball” – there is at least a yellow right since it say ‘OR’ instead of ‘AND’?

        Please enlighten me. :?

May I also ask if the qtn read this way: There must be a yellow or blue ball. Is the answer be 5 ways too?

i kaypoh .. posed your Test qn to Dr. Yeap Ban Har.

            below is his reply:-

            ================================================
Bala has 6 white ping-pong balls.
He has to colour them yellow or blue.
There must be at least a yellow or a blue ball.
How many ways can he do it? (Hint:make a systematic list)

....this is based on Chapter Two - Number Bonds

            0+6 and 6+0 are out -
because there must be at least a yellow or blue ball.

            answer: -
            Total 5 ways:-
            1+5, 2+4, 3+3, 4+2, 5+1

Thank phtthp for your help. I felt blessed to have this forum. I am none longer a lone ranger fighting the battle with my DS alone. I have more support now.

I agreed with the answer as I think the ‘number bonds’ helps clear the doubt.

                  Dearest 2010sunflower & catherineleesg, :snuggles:

We are all learning from one another, me too.
glad to have this forum:- as we can continue to uplift one another whenever we face commonly encountered questions not sure how to solve for our kids.

The question I posted was Rulang P1 mid year 2012 exam qtn. Their qtns are to kill. Personnally, I felt it will somehow demoralized kids.
