Very hard to read your post when my eyes are demonstrating a saccadic leftwards movement at 4 second intervals.....3Boys:
[quote=\"ksi\"]This is simply a disagreement between parents on both sides of the fence. MOE's guidelines have always been clear on this, NO EXPENSIVE GIFTS. This case becomes debatable because of the perception it gives. It becomes an issue because everyone has different views.

I was told by DS's school, no gift exceeding $50, according to MOE's guidelines...... MOE's measurement is in place all along...
The meno was from a group of parents (Parent Support Group), appealing to another group of parents (CHS parents) to donate gifts for the annual Teachers' Day Dinner. It is like organizing a Company Dinner & Dance and seeking sponsorships for gifts for its Lucky Draw.
The memo was NOT from the school, asking the students to give expensive gifts to their teachers (as the title of this thread wrongly suggests). Hence, whatever gifts donated were from the PARENTS to PSG, in support of PSG's effort to organize the annual Teachers' Day Dinner for the teachers. The children were not involved and should not be in the picture at all.
The Teachers still celebrated Teachers' Day with their respective classes (class parties, concert in the Hall) and the kids still gave inexpensive little gifts to their teachers. Nothing has changed. My DS2 bought red pens for his teachers, ONE pen each only! Aiyo, I felt rather 'paisey' but DS2 said his teachers told them not to buy any gifts for them, but he wanted to show his great appreciation for his teachers, so he bought A pen for each of them Lor!
Don't think the kids will compare what gifts their parents donate to PSG. My DS2 did not even show me the memo. I found it in his bag when I was searching for something (can't remember what) end of last week. After reading the memo, I just put it away. No issue at all. -

CHS teachers traditionally perform for children's day celebration though
do the NYPS teachers still perform for the kids on teachers' day ?
Why should trs perform on their own celebration day???? -

oh no, but yes, you are right! I remembered wrongly the teachers' performance is for children's day, not teachers' day .... :imsorry:

Actually some of the most meaningful gifts from my students are the inexpensive ones. I told them if they really want to give something to me, spend some time sitting down and writing a really sincere note to me. If they really, really need to go into a shop to get something for me, then just get me a red pen or a marker or marker refill will do.
I told this to my P6 class last year and they remembered. This year when they came back to visit me, most of them wrote cards with red pens attached to it. The message was so sincere and touching that I teared while reading some of them.
Those cards are now displayed at my workplace and will continue to serve as my motivation to educate the future generation for many years to come. It cost almost nothing but to me, is the greatest gift of all

I read someone mentioned that sometimes the people giving the presents are overly enthusiastic....resulting in such a fiasco. Teachers expectation is really showing of APPRECIATION of their efforts and passion from the heart, not the gifts. Another realistic way of showing appreciation is don't give the teachers any problems, especially when they try very hard. (case in point, the haircut incident)Actually some of the most meaningful gifts from my students are the inexpensive ones.
