Could someone please offer me some advice. DS has been offered a place in HCI but I am worried that he cannot cope as his Chinese is very weak. Despite the principal saying that as long as your child does not hate Chinese, the school will help him. May I know whether there are special programs / tutorials for kids who are weak in Chinese? What happens if he keeps failing his Chinese?

        Thanks in advance

There are remedial classes for those who dont get at least a B4 for each subject. However dont worry! The chinese is not as difficult as you think. There is no penalty for those who keep failing chinese. As long as your ds works hard and pays attention, he can make it! πŸ˜„

I have heard that kids who dont make it will be asked to leave the school so that they can do the O level instead. So I was wondering if it is based on Chinese as well. Apparently there is Chinese Literature on top of the usual Chinese textbook? Is that an examinable subject?

they do their O level in HCI, not leaving the school. and if their O is good, they stay on in HCI for year 5/6

the info you heard is wrong

There are kids who are not from SAP school formally attend HCI too and also taking HCL. For minority who really really cannot cope with HCL (same standard as in any sec school), HCI will advise them to sit for 'O' level Chinese at sec.3 as well. which is compulsory in all other sec school (except few IP-schools) who offer HCL. So not to worry about HCL. Infact, the kids have lots of training and programmes to improve their Chinese over there so long as they themselve don't switch off lah... what's more, NO TUITION IS NEEDED in fact if they pay attention and do their assignment given by teachers πŸ˜‰

                  Dear HCI parents,

DS has gotten offer from RI & HCI, & he is interested in HCI base on following reasons:
                  1) HCI seems to involve their students in organizing the school events.
                  2) He is interested in the Entrepreneur prog.
                  3) He heard during the open house that the teachers are very caring & good mentors.
                  4) he feels that HCI might not be so stressful as compare to RI.

Will u be able to share is his understanding correct? As for the entrepreneur prog, is it open to any students who are interested in it?

DS will be in I-sparks, is there any parents who can share how are your DS coping in I-sparks? Do they need to stay up late frequently?

And for CCA, how many do the boys need to have? Is uniform group compulsory?

                  Would appreciate your sharing. Thanks

Hi Yukilei, Congratulation to you and DD!

Only one CCA is compulsory, some CCA are optional (like the Merit CCA they have in RI), for those who can cope with two.

Whether I-spark or not the syllabus is the same but certain topics may come in different subsequent. That’s all I know as a HCI parent my experience is I now no need to get involve in my ds work and he is doing fine. All I know is he has quited his Chinese tuition and still managing well which help me save $$. Oops… really appreciate him,… haha.

Otah, is HCI your DS first choice? Was he formally from SAP school?
How is he coping & is he enjoying himself in school? Have you been involving your DS school work when during his primary school? How many I-spark classes are there in HCI?

Sorry for all these questions... This mummy is kancheong... thot it'll be good to provide more info for DS.

                      Thanks in Advance. :thankyou:

Yes, HCI was ds first choice though we had wanted him to consider RI after PSLE release due to the mix culture environment. But he persisted leh and we could not rule over him. Haha. He is doing well and like many parents of any secondary school nowadays, we are worrying about his hours of sleep, enough water intake..etc. HCI was his dream school so to get to his dream school he had always been an independent worker in his study till now. We feel quite relax in fact during his PSLE year and leave it to school to prepare him for PSLE and he did follow closely and do well.

For languages learning environment, quoted from one parent's in the past.

\" if you intend to do higher chinese in secondary level, the standard will be equally high at RI. The advantage of HCI over RI in Higher Chinese is that, there are other opportunities for you to use and be immerse in the chinese language other than the normal Chinese lessons. This could help them to improve in the language faster. The boys are expected to do compulsory debate / current affairs discussion in both Chinese and English. They are also given both chinese and english newspapers (alternating) to read in the mornings.\"
