For a cut off score of 241, what would the chances be for getting into Cedar girls SEc school? Based on past History, would we get through if we appeal provided we choose Cedar girls as 1st choice?

The cut off this year is 244.

      Helpless.

Chances r slim since it is 3 points off.. if u wanna appeal , you must have \"something to offer\" for the appeal as there will be people with 243, 242 appealing too ... u can take it that you are offering a skill in exchange for the 3 points shortfall... and by skill, i m referring to Track & Field (ie Cedar's forte for many many years) FYI Cedar reigns in the Track & Field department & almost always the defending champion until the Singapore Sports School came along which makes it even more challenging...so if your girl can run, jump or throw... then maybe u can try..however this is still subject to Principal's approval.

Yes Cedar is also v good in Science - during my time there were 4 pure Science classes. I would say girls in generally are well-behaved & motivated ...however as in any other schools, there are bound to be some \"bad hats\" here & there every year - these are usually the girls the prefects & head mistress \"watch over very closely\" year after year ...and the school works very closely with parents of these girls to ensure they grow up observing proper decorum, so, even if they are naughty, it is quite hard for them to be \"those true blue ah lians\" (if u know wat i mean)

Many of my frens i know from Cedar graduated w 1st class honours eventually ...well, except me & a few others..just armed w a Bachelor 😒

And someone mentioned \"notes\" - yes that's Cedar - the teachers work extra hard & supplement lots of notes they compiled together & passed it on to the students for revision. If i rem correctly, this is usually the history & literature papers as these 2 subjects have a lot of details to remember so the teachers kinda help out by providing summary & sample essays πŸ˜„

Chinese emphasis is great too.. They always hold \"Chinese Oratorical Contest\" (Xiang Sheng) supposedly to build confidence (overcome stage fright) and inculcate an accurate diction ..hehe

By & large , a very very good school with an equally rich culture which only Cedarians will live to tell & appreciate ...as the song goes Unite Cedarians Unite πŸ˜„ :celebrate:

          Hu Yan Ling:

In the end her choices were(accordingly): Cedar, Anglican, St. Nicholas, TKGS, TK Sec, Chung Cheng Main.
I'm quite happy with her choices.
          πŸ˜„
Hey our choices are about the same, Cedar, TKGS, AHS, Dunman Sec, TK Sec and Chung Cheng Main. (all along the east to south) We just submitted πŸ™‚

            heutistmeintag,
in case you have not found out....
            heutistmeintag:
I am not familiar with the public transport system  as I have been driving in the past. Could anyone help to advise what is the easiest/fastest way to get from Pasir Ris or Tampines MRT to
            1) Cedar Girls
not sure if these are the fastest way, but they are the only few ways that i am familiar with
            1) MRT to Potong Pasir MRT --- walk
            2) Tampines Interchange - Bus No. 8, 65 to Macpherson (Landmark : Betime Bldg) --- walk

            Bus 8 Route
            http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/journeyplan/route_information.asp?qdirect=1&qservno=008&qpoint=NO%20LOOP&dispno=8&qstart=TAMPINES%20INT&qend=TOA%20PAYOH%20INT

            Bus 65 Route
            http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/journeyplan/route_information.asp?qdirect=1&qservno=065&qpoint=NO%20LOOP&dispno=65&qstart=TAMPINES%20INT&qend=HARBOURFRONT%20INT

if your mind is set to select this school, after a few days, your girl should be able to find out from her friends the nearest/fastest way to commute from home to school cos she should be able to find a mix of students from all across SG. πŸ™‚ (i spent some weeks taking feeder bus to interchange to take bus to sch before finding out from friends that there is a short-cut πŸ˜‰)

            Good Luck!

Thank you Maisy for your help and information.

My daughter has made her choices -
Cedar, PLMGS, TKGS, St. Margaret’s, Riverside and Yishun town Sec.
The last 2 being in the North where we live.

              Keeping our fingers crossed.
She got Merit for HMT but I understand that they will add the 2 pts only for SAP schools. So, she loses out in the case of Cedar, I guess. It could have been 241+2 and very close to the COP.

Since you have put Cedar as first choice, you can appeal. Appeal form are on Cedar website & they ask for mail/post it.

No worries - oh u didn't mention abt your daughter's achievement in HMT. Even though Cedar is not a SAP school; the school values Chinese Language & its culture too (well at least in my time πŸ˜› ) In that case if she doesn't get in, (i hope she does really so it saves u the hassle of appealing), then u may appeal using the HMT, just tell the Principal you heard the school has a strong appreciation for the Chinese Language & culture & you are hoping your daughter can continue to flourish in this area as well as other areas in this school πŸ™

I'm not sure if it is right for me to say such things in a public forum but people , please don't throw stones at me... I'm just trying to help Bounty & her/his daughter out. πŸ˜“

Dear, dear Maisy, no one will ever stones at you .... you know why?

My daughter's HMT is Tamil .... big joke!!! No offences meant !!! πŸ˜„
I am an Indian (mother), however being educated in Hong Kong, I did French as a second language. After I got married and settled down in Singapore, I was told that my children had to take Tamil as it is their mother tongue. I have never helped them in the language ... they have studied on their own so I was very impressed with my daughter's score.
Is it easy to meet the Principal? I was told by many to meet the Principal, however I am a bit uncomfortable about it.
Thanks for your help Maisy. Please do continue with your advices.

Apologies for the blunder cos i simply assume u r chinese when u mentioned HMT - my oversight (so now u know why my peers got 1st class eventually & not me? hahahaha).

Why not meet the Principal? Can I know what is it that makes you feel uncomfortable? U know in any school (not just in Cedar), I'm pretty sure the Principal & Staff encourage Parents' involvement (of course within limits). It is not as if you are hounding them day & night over this admission. If it is only 1 visit to clarify any doubts, even if your daughter doesn't get in...you will be satisfied as you've got your questions answered.

Put it this way, if u r the Principal, would you be moved to see concerned parents coming down to speak to you (within limits) about the child's admission, education & development?
I would bcos I know that together with concerned & involved parents, we can bring up a beautiful next generation more easily (so long as it is done within reasonable means - not those who will sit outside principal office everyday & keep asking tonnes of never-ending questions).

Thanks again Maisy. Well, one of my friends told me the same thing. She said I should meet the Principal and get all the questions answered once and for all.

Uncomfortable meaning a bit shy I should say. Anyway, after seeing your reply, I just called the school to fix an appointment and they said that both Principal and Vice Principal are out of town. I was only asked the reason why I wanted to meet her. I tried to find out when they would be back but to no avail. Now, I am going to send in my letter of appeal. who would see it? The Staff or the Principal???
