dis move I wld agree is logical.
During my time when I was a trainee, my room-mates went to bed about 1 am almost every nite n then we woke up at about 4 am for area cleaning, 5 BX, running n breakfast.
Dis was continuous for five days for a period of about 2-3 months in d run-up to ROC training.

I don’t think we can get away indefinitely for paying such jobs such as cleaner a meagre pay. Is all base on market force. If other countries including 3rd world countries are all implementing minimum wage, sooner or later, this source of workers that help close our gap will dry up. We have to take into consideration that the cost of living in Singapore is high such that even foreign labor workers may not have much to save after paying for their basic expenditure. Our model of exploiting the lowly paid workers won’t last long.

I believe it's also the fellow Singaporean's attitude towards such workers. It's an honest job, but these diners not only do not show appreciation when a cleaner clears the table , taking for granted that's he's paid to do the job but also these cleaners are made to feel like they are low class Singaporeans. It's really a thankless, tiring job on top of the fact that they're not adequately remunerated.

So far I've encountered more friendly attitude towards cleaners than bad. I think Singaporeans are getting more empathetic these days, esp. toward the older folks. On the contrary, I've met 2 old folks working at different food outlets with unexpected behaviors:

One was an old man who was busy cleaning a table, and customers had to wait for him to clear the table before they could use. There wasn't any central depositing counter for customers to leave the dirty dishes in, and everyone had to wait for him to make his rounds, yet, he refused to let customers deposit the dirty dishes into his bucket, and insisted that they leave them onto 'other tables' - which were all occupied.

Another case was an old lady who felt customers were \"making things difficult\" for her by asking for this and that. She even took the liberty to scold customers who changed seats like she's their grandmother At first, I felt rather annoyed by her behavior, but after imagining her to be our mother, we became extra warm, polite and considerate, and our friendliness changed her behavior too! She really became like our grandmother, taking good care of us, asking what else we needed

Time to automate. In some countries, you can go to self checkout counters. I don't know if I remember correctly but I think there was a Cold Storage outlet that has a self checkout counter.

Really?! I've never experienced auto checkout. Maybe these are the trial stores, yet to be implemented island-wide. How long have they been implemented in these stores?

But then again, if I were to go through what you guys have gone through, I would have said \"it is right to do away with the cleaning! \"

I wld treat teaching d kids to perform household chores as a necessary life skill n military discipline as two separate issues.
With SG girls so demanding these days - only want to marry boys who hv achieve 5Cs n must help out in housework - it is a necessary pre-requisite to get hitch! :rotflmao:

Yeah, instilling regimental discipline was d proffered reason for those tasks- area cleaning, stand-by bed, military drills with shining polished boots n smartly ironed uniforms. However, these tasks take away valuable training time n eats into soldiers’ sleeping time. With d reduction of time spent in NSF (it was 2 ½ years during my stint), n d high financial costs of bringing in NSmen for ICTs, it makes good sense to maximise d time for training n sub out d cleaning jobs.
