A few years liao, at GWC Cold Storage.... payment by cards, self pack... rather convenient...

Is it easy to use? Not many choose to use those counters...or maybe they are not working.

It's easy, but some customers bring the merchandise back n forth passing the scanner more than once, cause double scanning, then the customer serv officers have to step in to help... the ang mohs are the frequent users...

the auto checkout machines are quite \"intelligent\" too, the machine will not proceed if the customer try to \"smuggle\" any item into the plastic bag without scanning.... that's the reason it always jam n alarm siren, I guess

I believe it's also the fellow Singaporean's attitude towards such workers. It's an honest job, but these diners not only do not show appreciation when a cleaner clears the table , taking for granted that's he's paid to do the job but also these cleaners are made to feel like they are low class Singaporeans. It's really a thankless, tiring job on top of the fact that they're not adequately remunerated.

So far I've encountered more friendly attitude towards cleaners than bad. I think Singaporeans are getting more empathetic these days, esp. toward the older folks. On the contrary, I've met 2 old folks working at different food outlets with unexpected behaviors:

One was an old man who was busy cleaning a table, and customers had to wait for him to clear the table before they could use. There wasn't any central depositing counter for customers to leave the dirty dishes in, and everyone had to wait for him to make his rounds, yet, he refused to let customers deposit the dirty dishes into his bucket, and insisted that they leave them onto 'other tables' - which were all occupied. 🤷

Another case was an old lady who felt customers were \"making things difficult\" for her by asking for this and that. She even took the liberty to scold customers who changed seats like she's their grandmother šŸ˜† At first, I felt rather annoyed by her behavior, but after imagining her to be our mother, we became extra warm, polite and considerate, and our friendliness changed her behavior too! She really became like our grandmother, taking good care of us, asking what else we needed šŸ˜‰

I've had my fair share of such encounters too. But I notice whenever I thank them, they would look pleasantly surprised . They are more willing to clear the tables properly too. šŸ˜„ Only shows how much they've been appreciated..

Maybe if Singaporeans are more used to such self-service concepts, we'll rely less on FW. I notice that these counters are always under utilised.

Also at MRT stations, I see long queues at the counter that is manned , but not many go to the top-up machines. Why huh?

I'm not sure but I think where they work also plays a part.

At my regular foodcourt, the uncle/auntie always acknowledge when I thank them. But at my workplace hawker centre, the cleaning ladies no reaction one.
Time to automate. In some countries, you can go to self checkout counters. I don't know if I remember correctly but I think there was a Cold Storage outlet that has a self checkout counter.

Saw this at Cold Storage Great World City and NTUC finest @ Clementi Mall

Really?! I've never experienced auto checkout. Maybe these are the trial stores, yet to be implemented island-wide. How long have they been implemented in these stores?
Easy enough. Scan and pack as you go and pay. I find it faster. Everytime I step into Shop N Save I feel like telling the counter staff to stop yakking and scan faster.

I would prefer that at the petrol kiosk as well. Used to be able to pay at the pump with my corporate card. But now no coroporate card need to go queue up and pay. No need pump attendant either, I can operate the pump myself. Zip in swipe card, pump and zoom out. Faster too for the ones behind me.
