Was at Taka trying mooncakes, again. Haha! This time with the entire family. Bought a snowskin from Obolo and 2 snowskins from Goodwood. My husband wanted his share of traditional double yolk so decided to go for the HK variants as I had bought him the local offerings last week.

I am getting the Teochew yam mooncakes for the elders in the family from Long Jiang. My friend’s dad is one of the shareholders there so can get a small discount. Actually East Ocean does a good one too but I have ordered from Long Jiang…

Uh, I guess I could get extra and you guys collect from my place at Toa Payoh? I will try and get the prices from my friend and post it here. If I don’t remember wrongly, it’s 15% or 20% off retail. This type of discount is only reserved for those who order in bulk, ie 10 boxes kind.

Bengawan Solo mooncakes so horrible, the paste stuck onto the teeth.

There is one seller can’t remember the brand, paste never stuck onto the teeth one. I think it is Joo Chiat. Some sort of homemade type.

Between Long Jiang n East Ocean, which one is better?

I used to buy from Long Jiang donkey years ago when the restaurant was still in operation and they were selling from Crown Prince Hotel, until one year, their yam flaky skin tasted horribly from the taste of oil used again n again.

I have not tried East Ocean yam flaky mooncake. Waiting for 17th Sept when they sell in JCube.

I think I must be the odd one out here. I do not like the idea of eating mooncake in the 7th month. I think it is not in accordance with traditions.

I hope mooncake will never become like durian - available to the whole year round.

I tried East Ocean when it just came out of the oven so of course it had the upper hand… I think East Ocean is less oily… Last year I had Long Jiang’s and it was good. If I had a choice, I would have gone for East Ocean, not because it’s better but because I like a change and they are both comparable.

Out of topic here, but, don’t buy durian when it is not suppose to be in season. These are mainly those which have been "jabbed" with all sorts of chemicals so that they would grow. A stall at Telok Kurau area sells frozen durian when it is not in season and these are from the ones he kept when it was in season.

Geez friendship, but I love the fruit-flavoured ones of Bengawan Solo. Always end up buying that brand despite going around trying others.

Do you mean the normal mooncakes or the fruity ones?

My kids and I actually like 大中国lotus paste (no yolk). Don’t know what is the price this year but it’s simple indulgence and probably not as expensive?

Bengawan solo I bought was the traditional double yolk. So sticky to the mouth. Can’t even talk while eating.

Joo Chiat mooncakes can eat and talk.
