Why screen kids in P1?

Yes there are stressed parents.
As we know, even though made known, parents still have a lot of issues with the GEP testing, still a lot of foul play is being cried...SAHM_TAN:
Hmmm, right now GEP testing is optional. I know the reasons for testing. Kids who passed GEP goes to GEP, kids who pass 1st round but not second round are offered some enrichment programs.
I'm not stressed.
I'm looking for something in primary school education but doubt I will see the version that I want in my life time or even ever. My dh commented that I'm too idealistic.

Still I like to raised my hands (both) and say that I'm not stressed by the GEP.
Pple can have the stressers of their choice. My choice of stress is not this

ah chey..verdict out ah....
i just got a chance to read this thread today...and as i was reading...a conspiracy light lit up...
Maybe at P1 first checkpoint on IQ, then at P3, second checkpoint... after second checkpoint, can determine if our lower primary Education can improve IQ or not.. If can, how much, and effectiveness...bla bla bla..

[/quote]It would be good to know if you represent the majority of parents.

Plenty of studies can be done with the P1 IQ data. What you suggest is one such. They could also relate to A level results... access to Ivy League... earnings... marital satisfaction in future. IQ doesn't change over time. At least, theoretically, it isn't supposed to.ah chey..verdict out ah....

It could even be used to assess school effectiveness by relating to PSLE results. If a group of kids of high IQ in School A scores significantly lower than kids of same IQ from ANOTHER School B, then School B is a poorer school since kids of the same IQ should score about the same at PSLE. This would be a perfect reason that would get me to accept P1 IQ testing... however, this means that ONLY the researchers access the data.
It is NOT open data for Teacher reference so as to prevent the Pygmalion effect and Teacher Bias. -

I do think majority of the parents out there are not that stressed up by GEP. So far, majority of my friends could not be bothered about GEP. The few whose kids made in through were more concerned about the need to change schools and logistics if the kid wants to pursue that path.

I seriously doubt they will go that direction.
the cycle will repeat ....
next time MOE adopt another form of some new testing method to test out another batch of students \"secretly\", another parent will write in complaint to Straits Times.
Based on this \"Together with their academic performance, it is an exercise used to identify pupils who are progressing poorly.\", it sure make sense not to administer this test to 100% of the students when they could just focus on the % identified thru daily academic work. Then they can use the 'unused' resources and pump them into these students who really needed help. -

MOE is not out to GET us.
They're just a bunch of people trying to do their job (and feeling hurt in their pride that we don't think they've done a good job and so they went on the defensive). From the look of Ho Ching's speech to Principals a while back, they were pretty clueless for a while too about what to do. Now though, I think people like Lawrence Wong, Sim Ann and HSK see more clearly the way ahead.
Still... why would HSK say class size not important but GEP has small class size? -
Chenonceau:
I think in order to get the class down from 40 ~30, there need to be another 50 pri schools if I'm not wrong.

Donch get me wrong, I all for smaller class size...but I think they haven't yet figure out how to increase the schools by another 30% -
Nebbermind:
I understand this too. I know that it isn't easy. So then, say it. Dun say it's not important and have the shining beacon of GEP small classes belie your words. Like this, how to trust?

Build schools with more levels? Can build up or build downwards.

As much as I LOVE single session, smaller classes might be achieved with 2 sessions for each level. This way physical size of the building can remain.
