My kids are still in kindy and elder one is going to P1 next yr. I am shocked to read from here that sch textbooks are useless! Are they really??
I remember when I was in Pri sch we used the textbooks but for English in P5 and P6 my English teacher often referred to another guidebook that I bought as well. This book contained exercises on grammar etc. I still remember the thick blue book
I also remember that my teacher photocopied many worksheets for us for comprehension, cloze passage etc.
I think some form of supplement is still required on top of the textbooks, but to say that textbooks are totally useless just shocks me! Guess I will know come next year! -
I think I am going to supplement DD’s English by making her do what I did in my days, get her to read more than 100 Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Alfred Hitchcock & the Three Investigators etc. Yeah, how quaint. Nowadays can use Harry Potter. Guaranteed to make your DC’s English more powderful than the Powerpuff Girls.
Should have done that for my Chinese too, but meh, nobody told me there are readable Chinese books like Condor Heroes until after secondary school. A few sets of Jin Yong novels will do wonders.
Only problem is I may have to disconnect the internet connection… -

i support u to go for official complaint too... if there is a need, ask everyone in ksp to write a letter each....Seems like the mindset of many parents now is to accept without question. If textbooks are lousy, just buy... then buy more guide books and assessments.
If a child does not quite understand the lesson.. seek help... but help from tutors.
maybe we have the power to change the history of education..!! -

in our times, the difference between text n exams are probably 30% more difficult in exams only. but nowadays exams are like 90% more difficult than the text, that's why parents here are complaining so much...My kids are still in kindy and elder one is going to P1 next yr. I am shocked to read from here that sch textbooks are useless! Are they really??

u will get to realise it soon... -
My friend just called me.
Her son was told this by his teacher, ‘If you believe so much in tutors, no need to attend school. No need to attend PSLE’.
The boy is studying in a popular school. -

I think I'm not the only parent who feels that school text books are inadequate. It's really very sad that the text books we HAVE TO BUY do not give a TRUE picture of what exams really are. :?:Nebbermind:

his teacher is not being fair... its true that nowadays if our kids encounter any problems in their hw, they ask tutor and not teacher... just because the teachers didnt do enough, that's why parents need to look for tutors! My friend just called me.

When my son asked teacher how to do a question, the teacher told him 'to go and think'. Die die refused to teach. This happened to neighbour's son last year too. That boy asked 3 times and teacher refused to tell until the mum got fed up and wrote in. Also told the teacher if student needs help, TEACH HIM !!!

another instance my dd ask her teacher, \"teacher, this one not taught yet, how to do?\" teacher say \"go home and read. i'm sure yur tuition teacher already teach u in the holidays.\"
this is totally insane!!
