Mummies… anyone of your kids going to N1 next year?

My DD will be starting N1 nxt year at the PCF with the K+ program. I received a letter about going to purchase the uniforms & pay for the book fee next week. I am surprised that even for N1, the book fee is almost double, which is $70+ instead of the normal $30+… but what is exactly the difference? Since the classes are only 1hr45min session per day regardless of K+ or not…

Also, my DD has not been to sch yet, thus I’m pretty sure she will be crying a lot especially during the initial period. I wonder what can they learn if the teacher has to spend another 15-30mins pacifying kids daily… but hopefully all will turn out well.

        Dear mamalin,

No.she will be in pm. I will see how it goes. This Pcf is going to upgrade another session as child care. Has yet to review it's program and structure。

This Pcf uses jolly phonics and have spelling since k1. It has enrichment after school which I find it may not benefit pm kids.

Confirm sure hv spelling at K1 level? Heard many diff cirriculum at diff branch. My dd just got balloted into 262A compassvale PCF. So come next yr both my DD (k1) and DS (N2) will be having 4hrs/day session. They are currently at a church kindy 3hrs/day.

What is the benefit of having Spelling to K1 children? For mums to compare the marks or to stress the poor child. A good preschool teacher who truly understands what is early childhood education will not provide Spelling at K1. It may do more harm than good for the poor child in K1.

          come P1, under English \"Stellar programme\" :-
after reading \"Big book\" storybooks aloud by teacher to P1 students in class, pupils need to answer questions in worksheets handed out, after hearing the story narrated by teacher. Some of the qns can be cloze passage(s) fill in the blanks type, or can be answer simple comprehension qns, or can be spelling.

if a child by K2 still not exposed to spelling, and first time go P1 then encounter spelling, it depends. If the child can catch up fast able to spell, no issue. But if the child struggle with spelling in P1, parents panic. To be able to tackle and answer simple comprehension qns, or told to re-order the sequence structure of sentence(s) into its correct sequence format, or requested to write minimal 5 to 10 lines picture composition containing Proper Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.

The child has to start writing in paragraphs, in complete full sentence(s).
Each sentence begin with a Capital letter and end with a full stop. This is when spelling helps a lot & come in handily / useful if a child already have some spelling background beforehand, or at least know how to spell the basic commonly / frequently encountered words, compared to another kid who still doesn't know how to spell. Ask - which child do you think will be able to write in paragraphs more efficiently / effectively - a child who knows how to spell, or a child who is weak / poor in spelling ?

most pre-schools introduce spelling in K2. But some \"kiasu\" a bit start earlier, at K1. A child entering P1 now is expected - to be able to both read AND write.

                Hi Mummies...

                Sorry this may be long...

My dotter is in K2 this year and since Nursery she has been studying at PCF in the west. I registered her there because its the nearest to my MIL. Nursery was peaceful and fine however from K1 a series of incidents happened. 😢

                1) She started crying and refuse to go School, after much probing realized that the Chinese Teacher forbid her to go Toilet because the teacher said that the Children keeps going toilet and this disturb her class!!! So from this incident onwards, i believed it was deeply imprint in her tiny mind though everything seems alright after we spoken to the teacher. Not long after the teacher was posted to other PCF and my dotter gradually get use to school.

                2) in K2, during 1st term, my dotter suddenly tell me that the teacher does not allow her and some other kids to take their snacks because they can't finished their schoolworks. I told her to try to write faster if others can finish their work on time u can do it too and this seems ok however sometimes in Jun Holidays, one day she started crying saying she was scare of school and schoolwork especially Chinese. She will wake up in the middle of the night crying and say she wanted to learn to write difficult chinese characters. she will often be startled up in the middle of the night too. Everyday when she is about to go to school she will start to cry and we can see that she is really frighten. We decided to bring her to see a Psychiatrist and though this helps a little but she still cry and commented that she is afraid of the teachers. We spoken to the teachers and also the principle, what makes me furious was when my MIL said she want to talk to the principle, the administrator commented \" Auntie, we are very busy leh!\" Oh Gosh! My MIL was frustrated and rebuked, \"Hey, we wanted to tell you about my grand dotter's condition but you are actually stopping us. We pay for her to study here and not deprived!\" then only the principle shakes her butt out!!! This is not acceptable for an education provider!!! :stompfeet:

Today, my dotter cried too and commented again that she was scared of school. :gloomy: The teachers there knows about my dotter conditions but what they do is check temperature and the necessary checks and say \"Go\" (means to enter the class). I thought the basics for teachers today are to show care and concern to children and let the children feel safe under their care? Sorry but i must says that these attributes are not found in this PCF

You may wondered why i did not change school. After the 1st incident, all seems ok so i thought this was the most convenient school for my MIL who can fetch her. After the 2nd incident which is now, and almost end of the year so it dosen helps to get her to new school for 1mth.

Mummies, i would be glad to hear your advice. thanks!

Mummy is your girl better in class?

I think it is ok for the teachers to exercise discipline and order in class. But it depends on the situation, if one is really urgent, teachers sld allow. After all, if there are "accidents", they are the one to clean after them.

But it is not ok for them to decline meeting parents, perhaps in that case, ur mil. Maybe there was a miscomm? Ur MIL perhaps asked during a busy period of time of dismissal? If a prior appt was made, or appt to be made at a later time, they would then be able to accommodate?

Btw which PCF branch is your girl in?

My sons studied in PCF Toa payoh Blk 247. I have nothing but praises for the school environment and teachers. The teachers are very caring, patient and kind. Though there is minimal homework, my Sons are able to read independently and do sums on their own. They don’t have English or Maths enrichment ao I credit it to the teachers who inculcate in them the habit of reading.
