She doesn't need to memorize. She has to learn the passages ie learn the words that she doesn't know. But each passage is long for P1 and she has to learn 3!!!!


Now I learn that other schools are testing up to 2 and 3 sentences. This is one of the passage.

For my daughter all the words in the dictation are included in that week's spelling or are words that they already know.

That does look quite hard for P1. And there is no need to have three.

Some of the words are in her spelling list.

I hope the teacher will only test 2-3 sentences. It doesn't make sense to set the bar so high in p1.

if its not a branded sch, i dun see the reason why they need to set the benchmark so high...

did u speak to the teachers before?? or maybe can call up the sch to ask??

I would be worried if the highlighted is the case. That only means either all the others kids have SAHMs (unlikely) which were diligent to help with the spelling tests or, they have tutors or go for English enrichments (more likely). My family is in neither catagory, and I have a girl coming to P1 next year :roll: What you posted is beyond what most P1s are expected to know (\"prowl\", serious?). That's the vicious cycle of tuition which teaches ahead and which pushes the bar higher and higher in class since schools have to set tests that \"differentiate\" the kids. What worries me even more is this is a neighbourhood school and not the branded ones..

The form teachers tells me matter of factly. It is not just her class that will be sitting for this test. It's given to the whole cohort.

I don’t know if the kids have tuition, SAHP, or are just bright. The expectation of them is high. Already in the previous test, they are tested on modeling and as usual my dd didn’t get the concept.

In today’s ST forum, a grandfather asked why he doesn’t need tuition but his grandson does. PM Lee said PSLE will not be scrapped but will be tweaked.


Schools have placed so much emphasis that we have to push our kids, but I don’t think parents should take all the blame. Look at the prelim papers set by the schools. Their intention is to create a ‘wake up call’ to students.
*The Math problems are a play of the English language.
*Science concepts tested are not found in textbooks.
*English textbook doesn’t teach anything.

Just doing past year paper after paper, but they are not marked or else swopped, neither are answers explained or the correct way to answer is not taught to teach/help students. Some teachers even tell parents that the expensive tutors they hire are not coaching kids in school homework !!!
This is totally absurd !!! Even when I was in school then, my Chinese tutor did not coach me in homework. He was hired to coach/guide me.

I think the top brass should investigate such ridiculous incidents happening.
